so Esquimalt stops the permitting for the sewage treatment plant. wonderful! so 1 million gallons of raw sewage an hour continues to pour into the strait from the third world country of Van Isle. keep up the good work folks..............

Isn't Hanford in Washington state? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hanford_Site. The site of the most nuclear waste in north america that keeps pouring into the Columbia river the very fish we all depend on too sports fish?

The US is notorious for dumping very toxic waste which frightens me more, and that river goes right in ocean. That seems third world as well. I am not saying what Vic is doing is right I am just saying your country isn't innocent either.... Its not that easy to put in...Lots of planning and municipalities have to be on board. I am sure they will figure it out. They need to get going soon 2020 has to be in place.

Before I read you post right through I was thinking about how a stupid mess like this reads like a movie made about some third world hellhole-how those responsible can sleep @ night I will never understand.

Reel fast, couldn't agree more. Guess this means you won't be fishing anymore on the Island.

Hey reelfast how's the delisting of the elk herd in your state going. I understand the snowmobile community feels there is no longer enough of them to qualify for endangered protection? How's the California farmers move to delist the orcas so they can drain the salmon rivers? I guess you know third world!

Looks like we are all living in glass houses and throwing far too many stones. There are no innocent parties in either country, and as consumers of energy, and releasers of waste, we are all guilty ;)

Im mystified as to why Esquimalt doesn't want a sewage treatment plant in the middle of a residential neighbourhood its the ideal location!

We're working on the sewer thing. Many want it done right, those wanting to appear politically correct want to push through the proposed hair brained plan which included piping crap into the poorer communities and only half asses treating it. Don't forget we live on a rock and can't just dig a hole anywhere.

A personal friend of mine has taken video of the present outfall. Marine life flourishes there.

Don't forget that they want to take the dried
Sludge and spray it in the forests and maybe on farms. It will be cool when the rain washes it into our streams.

this has been an issue for over 20 years now. I would think the siting for this plant would have been resolved some time ago. I see our governor just kicked this up a notch today. I can see the boycott of the 60s repeating itself in the very near future. good thing you islanders don't rely on the tourist trade for your summer bucks.

PS - pointing out a variety of issues in WA is not an excuse for not taking action. no other metropolitan in the developed world is this blatant with their lack of concern for our shared environment.

Not all trolling is done on the water!

Coming from the co leader of world wide pollution this is indeed rich. You probably aren't aware that the US and China now account for 50% of the worlds pollution. So yes I'd say trolling, or perhaps just horribly misinformed. You may want to educate yourself on the issue, starting with the 95 cross border BC/WA panel on this issue. Then again you appear to be a writing guy not a reading one. Do us all a favour and start the boycott by staying off this site!

not sure why this has become an us versus them issue. what's wrong is wrong, and dumping untreated waste into the ocean is certainly wrong. I believe they've been doing it in halifax harbour also for years. makes me (and others) sick when I think about it... especially in this day and age,

The main stumbling block has been that Health and the Scientific community have essentially not given the treatment proposal a ringing endorsement. There is tons of info available online if you are interested. Things aren't as clear cut as Mr. Floatie and friends would have you believe.

Ziggy,
He isn't trolling, but you might be? When you are referring to a U.S. and China "outdated" number that both countries are working on. Plus, that number is total “Environment Pollution Carbon Dioxide from fossil fuels,” which does include carbon dioxide emissions from the consumption of petroleum, natural gas, and coal, and the flaring of natural gas. Remember, that is total output and from two of the largest countries.

Now, if you really want to find out which country(s) are doing the most damage based on “Metric Tons of Carbon Dioxide per Person (Capita) that just might make things look a little different. China certainly does have a problem with air quality (and smog - think LA there also). However, Canada is right up there with the U.S. and both dump almost three times more per “capita” than China. How's that make you (and the rest of us) feel?

Now with that I add... China and the U.S. are both working on their problems and issues. Might I ask, what is Harper "really" doing, other than withdrawing Canada out of every world organization trying to deal with this problem? AND, it really doesn't have anything to do with dumping raw **** into the environment!

Here's the link to the above: http://www.eia.gov/cfapps/ipdbproje...=8&cid=regions&syid=1980&eyid=2010&unit=MMTCD

Hey Charlie look up the meaning of per capita, totally unrelated to my comment to your pal. You might not be currently the leader, but if you look at per capita figures, multiply them times you population, tell me you aren't one of the leaders in worldwide pollution. Spin it anyway you want, if it makes you feel good and gives you the right to lecture. And frankly any **** dumped into the environment isn't good, even if you think yours don't stink!
