Russian tanker adrift off Haida Gwaii

Its going to interesting already complete fail as 24 hr response from tugboat.... There sending a US one. And they want to increase tanker traffic hmmmm.
 
It's a container ship not a tanker which is a little misleading. I'm not sure exactly what a tug is going to do if the predicted weather is accurate. What a nightmare...
 
Yeah it's funny how people worry about tankers yet don't give a thought to all the commercial traffic bringing the must have items from China! I'm glad this draws attention to the fact that all vessels have fuel onboard, enough to be disastrous, even those who service the isolated coastal communities!
 
Ya have to agree. This incident will be a major wake up call. Feds ruled out need for heavy tugs to be on standby if a tanker lost power. Probably one small blessing that will come from this disaster

Just imagine what might have happened if it was an oil tanker. This is a good practice run on a ship with training wheels so to speak.
 
Adrift without power for 24 hrs in those seas. Setting aside for a moment the bigger issues like fuel spills etc, that would be very unpleasant for the crew.
 
Unfortunately we need events like this near miss to remind us of how unprepared we are to handle a proposed MASSIVE increase in oil tanker traffic on BC's coast. First off, this ship did avoid a worst-case scenario by not running up on the shores of Haida Gwaii where crew and cargo would have been in serious peril. The fact that fortunate winds and sea conditions helped keep the Simushir away from land and that a 3rd tow rope on the Reid finally held to move to vessel off shore shouldn't be cause for celebration of a WORLD CLASS marine response. Only Ottawa can be so wilfully blind as to somehow watch a US Coastguard vessel pulling this Russian cargo ship into Port Hardy and say "See, we had this one all along".

Anyone who has spent time on our Coast knows that weather doesn't play favours and that this very well could have had a much different result. 20 + hours for the first help vessel to arrive is a success? 2 snapped tow lines is a success? Not having a Canadian vessel able to tow this ship to safety is a success? Unbelievable. Canada is running blind at the moment thanks to Harper's regime and we are not capable of dealing with (let alone knowing about) disasters like this one or the many other environmental, social, economic disasters that lie ahead. The fact that Ottawa try to use this near miss to highlight Canada's world class tanker traffic response is truly sad. Then again, it's a pretty sad time to be a Canadian IMO.
