Fishery Notice - Fisheries and Oceans Canada

Subject: FN0696-Salmon Fishing Closures for Southern Resident Killer Whale Recovery - Effective August 1 until October 31, 2019

This notice provides information on planned fisheries management measures for
the recovery of Southern Resident Killer Whales that will be in place from
00:01 hours August 1 until 23:59 October 31, 2019.

Juan de Fuca:
Subareas 20-3 and 20-4 are no fishing for salmon including Recreational and
Commercial fisheries effective August 1 until October 31, 2019.

In addition, all fishing is prohibited (with some exceptions) from June 1 until
October 31, 2019 in the Interim Sanctuary Zone located in portions of Subareas
121-1 and 121-2. More information on this area can be found in Fisheries Notice
FN0507.

In addition, a voluntary fishery avoidance zone (i.e. no fishing within 1,000
metres / 1 KM of Killer Whales) is in effect from May to October 31, 2019 in
Subareas both outside of these salmon fishery closures (Subarea 121-1 and
portions of Subareas 121-2, 20-1, and 20-5) as well as overlaid on northern
portions of the salmon fishery closure in Subareas 20-3 and 20-4.

Gulf Island (Pender Islands):
Subarea 18-9 and portions of Subareas 18-2 and 18-4 are no fishing for salmon
including Recreational and Commercial Fisheries effective August 1 until
October 31, 2019. Full coordinates can be found below.

Subarea 18-9 and those portions of Subareas 18-2 and 18-4 inside a line drawn
from a point located along Wallace Point on North Pender Island at 48°44.173’
north latitude and 123°13.956’ west longitude southwesterly across Swanson
Channel to a point located on the shoreline of Moresby Island at 48°43.765’
north latitude and 123°18.476’ west longitude, then northwesterly along the
shoreline to Parkin Point located at 48°43.885’ north latitude and 123°18.666’
west longitude, then northwesterly to northeastern extremity of Beaver point on
Saltspring Island at 48°46.518’ north latitude and 123°21.997’ west longitude,
then northerly to a point in water located at 48°46.838’ north latitude and 123°
21.979’ west longitude, then northeasterly to a point along the eastern
shoreline of Prevost Island at 48°49.258’ north latitude and 123°21.265’ west
longitude, then northerly and westerly along the shoreline to 48°49.475’ north
latitude and 123°21.319’ west longitude, then northerly and westerly along the
shoreline around Portlock Point to 48°49.944’ north latitude and 123°21.468’
west longitude, then northerly across Trincomali Channel to a point west of
Collinson Point on Galiano Island at 48°51.580’ north latitude and 123°21.376’
west longitude, then easterly along the shoreline to 48°51.583’ north latitude
and 123°21.128’ west longitude, then across Active Pass to Helen Point on Mayne
Island at 48°51.449’ north latitude and 123°20.719’ west longitude, then
southerly along the shoreline to the western extremity of Dinner Point at 48°
49.983’ north latitude and 123°19.663’ west longitude, then southerly, across
to Stanley Point on North Pender Island located at 48°49.199’ north latitude
and 123°19.544’ west longitude, and then southerly and easterly along the
shoreline of North Pender Island back to the point of commencement.

In addition, all fishing is prohibited (with some exceptions) from June 1 until
October 31, 2019 in the Interim Sanctuary Zone located in a portion of Subarea
18-4. More information on this area can be found in Fisheries Notice 0507.

In addition, a voluntary fishery avoidance zone (i.e. no fishing within 1,000
metres / 1 KM of Killer Whales) is in effect from May to October 31, 2019 for
Subareas 18-2, 18-4, 18-5, and 18-9; portions of which overlap with these
salmon fishery closures located in Subareas 18-2, 18-4 and 18-9.

Portions of Subareas 18-4 and 18-5 are no fishing for salmon including
Recreational and Commercial fisheries effective August 1, until October 31,
2019. Full coordinates can be found below.

The portions of Subareas 18-4 and 18-5 inside a line drawn from Murder Point on
Saturna Island located at 48°45.811’ north latitude and 123°09.318’ west
longitude easterly and northerly along the shoreline to a point south of East
Point at 48°46.867’ north latitude and 123°02.915’ west longitude, then
southwesterly to a point in water at 48°46.634’ north latitude and 123°03.117’
west longitude, then southwesterly to a point in water intersecting with the
international boundary with the United of America at 48°44.866’ north latitude
and 123°04.638’ west longitude, then southwesterly along the international
boundary with the United States of America to a point in water located at 48°
42.928’ north latitude and 123°11.505’ west longitude, then north easterly in a
straight line back to the point of commencement.

Subareas 18-2, 18-4, 18-5 and 18-9; portions of which overlap with these salmon
fishery closures located in portions of Subarea 18-4 and 18-5.

General Southern Resident Killer Whale management recovery measures:
The above noted fishery closures, Interim Sanctuary Zone fishery closures, and
voluntary fishery avoidance zones are part of a broad suite of voluntary and
mandatory management recovery measures designed to support prey availability
and recovery for Southern Resident Killer Whales. More information on the

9 and portions of Subareas 29-3 and 29-6.
