Olympics

Cut funding to school and other amateur sports programs, close hospital beds, funding cuts across the board, etc..... and they now spend a million on tickets for themselves?

DISGUISTING!!!

This could apply to the olympics. I don' think the taxpayers will get their two bucks back though.

Young Gordy lived in Vancouver and bought a donkey from a farmer for $100.

The farmer agreed to deliver the donkey the next day. The next day he
drove up saying, 'Sorry son, but I have some bad news, the donkey died.'

Gordy replied, ’Well, then just give me my money back.'

The farmer said, 'Can't do that. I went and spent it already.'

Gordy said, 'Ok, then, just bring me the dead donkey.'

The farmer asked, 'Wat ya gonna do with a dead donkey?

Gordy said, 'I'm going to raffle him off.'

The farmer said, you can't raffle off a dead donkey!'

Gordy said, 'Sure I can, I just won't tell anybody he's dead.'

A month later, the farmer met up with Gordy and asked, 'What
happened with that dead donkey?'

Gordy said, 'I raffled him off. I sold 500 tickets at $2 each and
I made a profit of $898.'

The farmer said, 'Didn't anyone complain?'

Gordy said, 'Just the guy who won, so I gave him his $2 back.'

Gordy now works for the government.

When I think about I need some pepto bismol and a large bucket to cure my stomach pains.
What a waste of money, Too many reasons why I cant comment on this anymore.

Olympics are a joke, I don't think a single Olympics has every produced a profit. Its all about a legacy for the elected officials and a chance for coca cola to shove more advertising down our throats.

Who really gives a sh*t on who can ride a sled the fastest down an ice slide.

Maybe 50 years ago the Olympics were a big deal but now its all corporate and corrupt, I don't support it at all.

Wow negative much? Ya sure it is not going to make a city rich and yes commercialism is bringing it down but dont go slamming athletes/sports?

It long run does bring a ton to the local economy. Do you have any idea how much this will boost tourism? Sure short term it will look ugly.It also gives athletes a chance to achieve something great because in Canada they sure are not going to achieve anything off the joke funding recieved. Finally it provides jobs, encourages people to try new sports ect ect. There are alot more benefits than jo schmo is going to see watching the news and listening to the problems over and over.

hey kelly I'm not slamming athletes or the spirit of pure competition, I'm a very athletic and competitive person myself.
But the Olympics has morphed into a creature about money and ego not sport.

If you do some reading you find out how corrupt and commercialized the Olympics really are.

I'm sure you have heard but we are spending $900,000,000 on security ALONE. The cost of the Olympics is projected at $6.0billion or more, we could cure cancer for the cost of these games.

"Negative much?" You bet!

It is f**king sickening. We will be paying this off for decades while a few companies will rake 100's of millions which will funnel into a hand full of people's pockets. Increase tourism? Ya, to WHISTLER and VANCOUVER! Tell me how that's going to improve the life of a fisherman in Port McNeill or even an Eco-tour guide up there. Even the "Joe Paycheck"'s that work on Whistler are getting the shaft: a girlfriend of my cousin's is having the rent on here apartment she shares with 6 double over the olympics while she works at a hotel there while her wage remains the same. I'm sure the international chain that owns the hotel will do wonderfully though which makes me feel much better. She's on an international work-exchange program thing so has to work were they send her or she'd be outta there.

And all the Olympic crap that everyone and their dog is trying to sell you! Did you know you will have to pay extra EVERY YEAR for that obnoxious "Best Place on Earth" olympic licence plate? And extra if you want to go back to a regular plate. That's me in your rear view pointing and laughing! As if I won't be paying for this crap through my taxes for the next umpteen years I'm supposed to pay ICBC to show my spirit! My specialty licence plate would say "Financial FUBAR"

Oh no it's for the athletes...I forgot. That means they'll be set for life financially after this though right? And they've been so well taken care of up by the government up 'till this point right? Check out this older but still pertinent article: http://www.cbc.ca/national/news/athletes/. It's all about the athletes so they must be getting a big financial benefit at the win right?
Check out this article which outlines the staggering fortunes they receive and how many years they have been receiving them for: http://www.cbc.ca/sports/amateur/story/2007/11/19/canadian-medals.html. I would imagine The stupid red mitten sale alone would be about 20 times the amount that filters down to the athletes.

At a time when employment is uncertain, the economy is still in the sh*ter and taxes are going up or new taxes are being introduced we are supposed to get behind a retardedly over-budget $6 billion party for the world's elite?

The only other budget-blowing money-pit I could compare it to would be owning a boat (oops)...or maybe more like building a FastCat...

The worst day fishing is better than the best day working...

A party for the rich paid for by the poor. They must be laughing their asses off at being able to foist this off as 'good for us'.

Do you think there would have been an Olympics here if it had gone to a plebiscite, like it should have?

How long did it take Calgary and montreal to pay off the games?
Are they still paying for them?! Does alot for a handful of people,
takes billions from ALOT of people... and so a few hundred people can go play games with each other for 2 weeks.

Did you know the indigenous games in Duncan a couple years ago had more athletes take part than the olympics?! Didnt see even a million go to that.

"What are your thoughts on the 1 million for Olympics tickets going towards box seats for MLA's and cabinet members?"

It's like hosting a barbecue in your backyard and paying your wife for the burgers you eat. Do you think the Chinese government had to pay for tickets in Beijing? A glitch in accounting is all it is.

The Olympics are coming. No amount of whining will change that. The amount of debt we all have to re-pay will be insignificant compared to the legacy of facilities in the province and goodwill created abroad. The fact that VANOC, the IOC, and most international sport-governing bodies are either extremely wasteful or downright corrupt will not prevent me from enjoying the stories, the drama, and the vicarious thrill of competition that only the Olympics can bring. I like all sports, but no single championship comes close to meeting my television watching needs like the Olympics do for 16 days every 2 years.
Keep breathing everyone.

Same with the World Police and Fire Games that happened here in Vancouver this past summer, the only inconvenience I encountered was some Horse Apples on the False Creek Seawall after a parade. [)]

And let's not forget about doping</u>, look how many Olympic athletes pump themselves full of **** a person can even pronounce even comprehend just to win 'for sport'.

It took Montreal 40 years to pay off their Olympic debt (just last year) and they weren't even close to what we are spending. Figure on your grandkids still paying it off. What a waste!

Get the pros out of it for starters...it was always much better to watch when the team events were strictly amateurs. Why should someone who CHOSE to go pro bump out an amateur from competing at that level. Millionaires competing for medals is a joke and has lessened the importance and appeal of the Olympic games.

I agree that financially these days the olympics are a problem which is to bad and you nailed alot of points. Ruins alot of the spirit but its not all doom and gloom. The spinoff will affect more than just whistler/van though.People are going to see our province and want to explore, invest and move here. Good and bad outcomes from this.

I agree 100% that athletes are recieving next to none of this money which is a joke. Im on the national team and on pace for london 2012. Everyone in my training group has been to at least one olympics and most struggle to break even.Im training 30-40 hours a week to make them which basically means i dont have a life. Thats why i get so passionate when i hear the olympics are a joke. The politics of it are a joke these days but the olympics as a whole still seem to be pretty special.

More bunk.

Modern media means there are few people anywhere who have money who haven't heard of this place, it also means that they can see for themselves that apart from Vancouver itself BC is mostly backwoods towns with little economic base and bush league politics hardly great places to invest millions.

In fact apart from the city of Vancouver/downtown Victoria visitor numbers will be down all over BC next year always are after the Olympics I know a guy who did his MBA on what happens to tourism based businesses in the year after Olympics, there is No</u> Good</u> News</u>.

Also the Winter Olympics are a small time sideshow that most people have never heard of/couldn't care less about it's not the Big Show not even close just some clowns rolling around in the snow (hockey excepted).

Honestly who on earth gives a **** about some dork skiing for 30 minutes then plinking away with a .22?
