Dear Minister,
Re: confirmation of extensive IUU Fishing throughout the lower and middle Fraser
We are receiving reports and pictures from a number of sources that there is wide-spread IUU fishing ongoing throughout the Fraser. In addition, there are reports of dozens, if not hundreds of gillnets seized.
Can you confirm if the reports are accurate? If the reports reflect what your staff are telling you, could you please provide details on how much IUU fishing is being reported, the number of salmon, steelhead and sturgeon seized by species, the number of gillnets seized, the numbers still fishing by location, how many C&P personal are engaged, and if there have been altercations on the grounds?
As you are well aware, a number of Fraser chinook, sockeye, and steelhead are endangered and all are well below conservation objectives. Any retained harvest and fishing related mortality will have a serious impact on these populations.
We look forward to an early and thorough response from you on this important matter. Thank you
