No Moose Hunting for non natives in region 5 this year.

Do they have the legal jurisdiction to make such a claim? Or will this be another Oka standoff and gunfight at the OKA corral?!

It says right there you can still hunt you just need to pay them off by hiring a guide. I'm sure you could negotiate to go out on your own.

The pdf files states that no treaty or agreement between the Crown and the band has been made regarding these lands, waters, and minerals.

If you read the write up it sounds to me like this is not a settled claim IE that band has no treaty. It won't stop them from protecting what they believe is their land and heritage. In fact sometimes bands without a treaty will get away with more then a band with a treaty.

They may not have the legal right and they may be posturing but that won't help you if you go all the way out there and a hunting party of natives comes along to escort you out. If you go anyways just bring your wallet so that if you are confronted you can make your donation.

33 pages of discussion on this very topic on the hunting site: http://www.huntingbc.ca/forum/showthread.php?84338-No-moose-hunting-in-Area-5

Extremely Dangerous Precedent should the Chilcotin Band proceed as outlined! It has an immense potential to effect both hunting and fishing access Province Wide.

That said, there are some clear heads involved and both sides at least appear to be working towards dialogue. Hopefully these efforts will come to frutition, otherwise it is going to be a Damn HOT Fall in Region 5! :(

Messy Messy Messy!!!

A Legal Petition in opposition to this action has been designed and is now ready to go.
This is NOT an online petition (carries no weight) but rather one that needs to be physically signed and sent back in.

If you simply want to sign it, or could collect a few more in addition to your own, send me an Email through the Forum and I'll get it to you asap. No pm's please, that inbox needs a little work and I'm a tad too busy to handle just now...

Cheers,

Wow, more than 400 posts on this over @ Hunting BC! Opinions run the gauntlet as usual.

Cooler heads must prevail here. We can and should all sit around the table and hammer this out. If there are serious conservation issues that are not being addressed by the Wildlife Branch - then good on the Indians for finally putting their foot down to bring some attention to it.

We all know how lax our government can be in the management department.

In my humble opinion, the buzz-word in all these land-claim and resource disputes is - sharing.

Clearly, we ain't going away any time soon, nor are we going to undue what our forefathers have sewn with their blood & toil.

I hope all my hunting brothers' would agree, that it's also of paramount importance that our FN brother's also have the security & sustenance they need to carry on with ancient customs and traditions that define who they are.

Likewise, just because my skin happens to be white - doesn't preclude me from needing to hunt as part of my culture!

I WILL NEVER - READ "NEVER!" - RELINQUISH MY RIGHT TO HUNT!

Nog,

Can we get one of these petitions sent down here to Victoria? I'd be happy to drop it off at Outfitters.

PM me if you want.

Adding:

Island Outfitters, Victoria

Also adding:
