Motor inspection before buying

I am heading up to Ladysmith Saturday to check out a boat. Besides the obvious things to look at on the motor, I was wondering if there is anything special I should do or check? I am pretty skilled mechanically but am wondering if it is recommended that I take the motor to someone in Ladysmith or just check it myself. I have come to accept that I don't know it all.

Here are the things I would check:
Compression test
Alternator charging test
Prop shaft warpage
Idle and shift tests
Water test

Anything else?

If anyone knows a solid mechanic in Ladysmith, let me know.

Thanks,
Dave

Pull the bottom plug on the lower unit and let a few drops of gear oil out onto a piece of foil.
if it's milky , there's water intrusion issues.

If it's a Honda you'll be looking at...in the late 90's...

look for any rust deposits or salt crystals just below the forward breather tube....

an indication the seals are failing between the lower unit and the powerhead
