More on Halibut Rigs

Way back in the late 1970's I caught my first halibut on this California style rig. We used this type sinker in the California surf when fishing the beaches. 6 ounce sliding sinker, 10/0 Mustad hook, 4 feet of 60 pound Mono for leader, cheap swivel. The main line was 30 pound Dacron. Red bead protects the knot.

All that for a halibut lol?
Jk
Love how people from this site actually prepare for there trips as opposed to getting there following out a guide boat dealing with there tangled **** 40 yds behind them then wonder why the other boat was salmon fishing before they got there head out of the bilge

When I longlined for them it was all cut-up chunks of Big Herring & Chum Salmon steaks. Hook every 6 feet, fish on every hook for 100's of feet. Don't think they are that picky.

I K.I.S.S. it
2' heavy leader, baited circle hook w/a skirt and a 1-2# lead weight
Sometimes I will use a tandem set-up with J-hooks and bait.

We used to sell halibut bait to the commercial boats out of Prince Rupert. They wanted our fresh grey cod (gutted) from the last day of our trip. They also wanted any octopus (skinned) that we had. So as you say I think they will eat anything.
