Lowrance HDS Carbon 12

Hi All

I just ordered the Lowrance HDS Carbon 12 of Cabelas for my project.
It comes with a 83/200kHz Skimmer® transducer.

While the boat is in for a refit, should I be upgrading the transducer? It already has a thru hull transducer glassed into the hull that I can replace fairly easily.

Any recommendations?

thanks

I have the same unit and it is paired with the P79 in-hull (shoot through hull) transducer. This model has an offset angle with different positions to match the dead rise of your hull so the bottom of the puck is parallel to the water surface. It has to be sealed in place (5200 worked fine) and the reservoir is filled with a specific antifreeze, the type of which I don‘t recall, to keep the puck immersed in liquid. I have been happy with this system once I changed the location of the transducer.
The dealer mounted the P79 on the keel which is the thickest part of the hull on my Campion 682 and it was sitting at an angle. It struggled to give readings, and didn’t work at all under speed. I moved it 1’ to starboard and positioned it according to mounting instructions with the top level - same as the water generally is - and I haven’t had a single issue with it since. The only downside to an in hull is the lack of temperature reading but speed is read via GPS and Yamaha outboard pitot.

That's a pretty pricey unit,I'd probably go with an Airmar 1 KW. transducer.Others on the forum can better suggest which one is best suited.

This is what is in there now.
it’s a furuno
