Lost shipping containers trigger warning for Vancouver Island mariners

Everyone out in the chuck between Ucluelet and Renfew - keep your eyes open...

Owner responsible for containers
The Korean shipping company Hanjin filed for bankruptcy in September. Many of its vessels are anchored in ports around the world, waiting for instructions on where to dock.

With the company's financial troubles, people are concerned about who will pay to clean up the debris from the containers that have washed up on the shorelines around Tofino, Lewis said.

Transport Canada said ship owners are ultimately responsible for their containers.

In a statement, the agency said officials have contacted the owner of the vessel to ask about plans for the retrieval and salvage of the containers, but they have not received a response. It's always the same story go bankrupt and let the environment suffer and taxpayer foot the clean up costs. Why don't they post an insurance bond paid for by all the shippers so when this happens crews can immediatly be sent to clean up the mess.

I met a guy up in Rivers Inlet last year and had a tour of his 65 ft yacht that was decked out. He said a couple of years ago he was travelling the WCVI in rough seas and his boat came to an abrupt stop... turns out he hit one of these lost containers and it ended up causing 100's of thousands of dollars of damage. Luckily they limped along at the time and made it safely to a marina without having to call a mayday but the fact these things happen regularly is disturbing.

@terrin I agree with your insurance bond idea. Would love to see the same thing for the logging companies who don't bother cleaning up stray deadheads in rivers and ocean. These all create serious hazards for boaters.
