Fishery Notice - Fisheries and Oceans Canada

Subject: FN0375-Recreational - Finfish: Lingcod and Rockfish: Management Plan in FN 0331 to include Sub-Areas 20-5, 20-6 and 20-7 and spear-fishing for lingcod.

Lingcod:

Effective 00:01 hours June 1, 2008 to 23:59 hours September 30, 2008, hook and
line fishing and spear fishing, you may retain one lingcod per day in Areas 13
to 19, and Subareas 20-5, 20-6, 20-7 and 29-5.

Area 28 and the balance of Area 29 will remain closed due to continued concern
for low abundance. For one year only, the minimum size limit for lingcod has
been reduced to 60 cm from 65 cm. This one year pilot has been implemented to
evaluate the impact on total rockfish mortality.

To summarize, for the Areas described:

-one lingcod per day, minimum size limit is 60 cm;
-ten lingcod per year, minimum size limit is 60 cm;
-hook and line gear and spear fishing

A recreational fishing mortality of 5,000 pieces has been determined as the
allowable catch to ensure continued rebuilding of the lingcod population within
the Strait of Georgia. The effort and catch within the fishery will be
monitored. If the monitoring program indicates that the allowable catch may be
reached before September 30, 2008, the fishery will be closed.

Rockfish:

Inshore rockfish are currently closed for fishing throughout the entire Strait
of Georgia. To ensure that conservation requirements are met, the recreational
rockfish fishery will operate concurrently with the lingcod fishery. The
rockfish fishery will open with lingcod 00:01 June 1, 2008 and close 23:59
hours September 30, 2008.

-one rockfish per day
-no size limit
-hook and line gear and spear fishing (confirming opening)

Rockfish Conservation Areas (RCA’s):

The RCA’s announced for the 2007 fishing season are in effect within the Strait
of Georgia. Since these areas restrict hook and line fishing and spear
fishing, lingcod will receive additional protection from these closures.

Variation Order No. 2008-227, and 2008-228
