Let's see your shop!!

Winter and the only boating most of us are doing at the moment is working on them. The shop is a happy place for tinkering with boats and trucks and much more. Let's see some shots of those man caves!

I have a storage yard for my construction business and am exceedingly privileged to share a 60×40 quonset with my best friend/fellow contractor/fishing buddy. Lots of space, if I'm doing a quickie job I can back in and close the door without having to unhitch the boat.

Wood heat for the main space with baseboard heaters in the washroom and a tiny office we use for storing water based finishes that need frost protection. We like cutting a couple loads of firewood each September but really I could supply enough offcut lumber and timbers from work. Still prefer to have a day out in the bush with the chainsaws though.

I think we just did this one not long ago but that’s OK I’ll contribute again.

Mine sits in my yard ( we have 70 acres 12 miles out of town ) just 30 yards from my house. It’s 40 x 50 with 16’ walls. Two doors, 1 10 x 10 the other 14 x 10. Heated with an overhead furnace. Heavily insulated with 6” walls and 16” blown in the attic. Fully equipped with 220 of course. I have it sort of divided into 3 sections. One side is tinkering and wood work, middle is mechanical and far side is fishing related. I have 300 gallon water cistern with hot water heater as fish cleaning counter. This is my home when I’m home from work, if I’m not working in the yard ( we maintain 3 + acres of lawn ) or out in the outdoors this is where I can be found. When I’m home I spend probably 75% of my free time in here. Fully equipped shop for all you want to do. Just about all the wood working tools, welding station with cutting torches, MIG welder and Lincoln arc welder. Full line of hand tools and air wrenches. Yup it’s my peide and joy for sure.

when I call it my shop my wife says “You’re in Oak Bay, people here don’t know what that is. You have to call it a garage.”
My wife and I did all the labour building my 20’x30’ shop with 10’ ceiling with the exception of hiring a concrete finisher and torch on roofer. Installed a NG Lennox heater so it’s always 17c inside.

I hate you so much. I could fit two of my houses in there.

That’s such a fabulous shop that I think we can even forgive the Esks banner.

Ya walleyes wins
Oh there’s a few nice ones that will pop up on here yet, but thx.

I did a lot of the work myself on this one and saved about $50,000 on the build. When I built this one in 2012 shop build costs were around $60/sq ft. This is actually a post beam shop that I finished. The outside shell with doors and windows was a package deal with construction. I then contracted out the cement which is 4.5” floating slab with 1/2” rebar on 16” center with 8” at the door entrance. I also contracted out the wiring then I took over from there. Insulated the walls myself as well as rented a blower and blew in the ceiling. I built a scaffolding and sheeted the interior myself. The roof I had the wife and kid help that was a bugger but we did it in 2 days. I also hung all the lights and outlets myself. And of course all the shelving inside. It is set up with a joist running the full length along the wall over the work bench if I ever want to put in a mezzanine, I may in a couple years. Of course I’m always adding some small things and adjusting, something like this is always a work in progress.

The last 600 Sq ft garage I built in Vancouver cost the owner $140k

Oh wow really. Was that because it was all blinged up RC or is that just the going cost there.

Just the going rate. My cost plus 10k for my troubles. $30k on framing lumber. Ridiculous.
Gee whiz hey, and that’s where lumber comes from lol. The package I got was $32000.00 erected. Like I said that was with all the doors and hardware including windows and walk in door. Build cost for mine not including my inside shelving or my water system but including heat was $70,000.00 plus minus a couple bucks.

Yes dust is an issue for sure. But it gives me an excuse to pet my baby on a regular bases lol. I do have to get a proper dust collection system installed for sure.
