Recently had a visit down at JO Thomas. Never have stayed too long but this time got a tour. Took in some heads and they ran them through the metal detector. Also showed me the tiny gross specimens from other heads with the coded pins in them. We then took a coded pin and put it under the microscope to look at # code. That number is 5 0r six digits long with each digit written in dot pattern. This and other markings provides the info on species, brood year and location. What amazed me is how tiny the pin is and how easily it can be lost. Its maybe the width of 10 lb test mono and 2 mm in length ?
They handle them with magnets, so as not to drop or lose them. If they get lost somewhere on the table or floor....a HUGE magnet comes out and the search is on! Very friendly helpful staff.
