I made a special “ammo-box trolling BBQ” (for grilling while fishing) … you can too!

Since my “DIY cutting table” post was such a hit and someone on here asked me put more details about my home made bbq I made out of a 50 cal ammo can (case) I decided to make a post with detailed pictures.

I use this when trolling for salmon or while at anchor for Hali.

When trolling it is attached to my side gunnel via the railing. It sites forward of my downrigger and out of the way. If the back fishing area.

I wanted a BBQ for grilling up a quick lunch while fishing but none of the commercial options were
1) small enough
2) could be mounted out of the way of my fishing rods/downriggers/fishing area.
3) I didn’t need a large bbq because I was mostly going to grill hotdogs and burgers for 2-4 people.
4) I’m cheap and this was wayyyyy less then a marine BBQ.

I saw a few ideas online and the one I liked best was the 50 cal ammo can bbq. There are many visors on YouTube but they are all charcoal. I modified these ones so mine could use 1lb propane bottles. I also made the grate a little deeper so hotdogs don’t roll off in wavy conditions.

Ive been using mine for almost 2 years now and recently made VERSION 2.

it’s pretty basic. I used parts from an old bbq for the regular and burner which I cut down to fit. The legs are blots I got free from IKEA. The holder is gold panted handle from a broken fishing net.

then for grate I bought a grate replacement part for $5 and heat plate I used scrap metal.

The regular, bottle, grates can come apart and all fits into the ammo case for storage. I even put mini tongs and mini spatula from the dollar store in there.

My wife likes it so much I use Version one as a travel bbq in my car for quick trips to the beach or lake.

total cost using old/used parts and the ammo case cost me about $30 or less (Ammo case was about $20 at princess auto)

I find this bbq the perfect size and it’s right out of the way when I’m fishing. I’ve even caught and landed fish whole the grill was running.

Looks cool. You might want to double check if you void your boat insurance by using it. That would be my only thing. Most of them are CSA approved I believe.

Thanks for the heads up. I'll look into it but My boat is aluminum and it sits on the gunnel so not much chance of fire. if there are any problems i'd just dump it over the side.
