Harper Government Announces Salmon Conservation Stamp Contribution to Pacific Salmon Foundation

VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA--(Marketwired - April 29, 2014) - The Honourable Gail Shea, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans today announced that the Government of Canada is providing $1.4 million collected from sales of the Salmon Conservation Stamp to the Pacific Salmon Foundation for a range of salmon stewardship and enhancement projects. The funds will be distributed through the foundation's Community Salmon Program to projects that address Pacific salmon conservation, enhancement and habitat renewal in British Columbia and the Yukon.

This funding is part of Economic Action Plan 2013 commitments, which dedicated all revenue collected from the Salmon Conservation Stamp to the Pacific Salmon Foundation, and increased the annual contribution to the foundation by approximately $1 million per year. The Salmon Conservation Stamp is a decal that costs adult anglers $6.00 and must be purchased annually to keep Pacific salmon caught in tidal waters off of Canada's west coast. Prior to 2013, about $1.00 from each Salmon Conservation Stamp was directed to the foundation.

Quick Facts

  • The Government of Canada also supports the work of the Pacific Salmon Foundation and other conservation groups through its Recreational Fisheries Conservation Partnerships Program announced in Economic Action Plan 2013. This program aimed at supporting fisheries habitat restoration projects led by recreational fishing and angling groups, as well as conservation organizations.

  • Given its early success and high demand, Economic Action Plan 2014 increased the funding available through the program by $15 million, for a total investment of $25 million.

  • Under the first round of the Recreational Fisheries Conservation Partnerships Program, up to $1.8 million funding had been made available for 28 projects related to Pacific salmon in British Columbia. Several projects under round two will also support Pacific salmon.

  • All of these initiatives are in addition to our Government's annual investments related to Pacific salmon. Currently we invest more than $65 million per year, of which about $20 million is directly related to Fraser River sockeye.

Quotes

"This funding is another example of our Government's commitment to rebuild, protect and conserve Pacific salmon," said Minister Shea. "Our Government is proud to support the important work of groups such as the Pacific Salmon Foundation to protect and restore fishing habitat for future generations."

"This funding commitment from Economic Action Plan 2013 brings a total of $1.4 million for Pacific Salmon Foundation projects over the past year," said Minister Shea.

"I commend the Government of Canada for making sure that every dollar an angler pays for the Salmon Conservation Stamp is returned to the west coast to support Pacific salmon conservation and restoration," said Dr. Brian Riddell, president and CEO of the Pacific Salmon Foundation. "This change will result in significant investments in our salmon and will be looked upon favourably by recreational and commercial fishers, First Nations, coastal communities and conservationists."

"The Pacific Salmon Foundation works in partnership with volunteer streamkeepers and community organizations to magnify the impact of every dollar generated through the Salmon Conservation Stamp. On average, at least $6.00 are generated locally for every $1.00 invested from the Salmon Conservation Stamp," said Riddell.

Now if they were announcing that they are giving back all the money they ripped wild salmon off for over the years. I might get excited.;) eman

Shea is an absolute embarrassment. She should have been sacked when she overruled her own staff. I am sick to death of East coast idiots thinking they know how to manage the West coast Fisheries. There has not been a single East Coast or Quebec Fisheries minister who has done anything except erode our salmon and other recreational fisheries opportunities.

conserve pacific salmon? wow.....I find it skeptical.....I witnessed the horror in DFO fishing mismanagement with seine fleet in Alberni Inlet in previous years. Robertson Creek stocks are at all time low and pretty damaged by seine overfishing. Logging is very active in the island`s watersheds, who is going to be accountable for protecting and conserve the salmon stocks 100 percent?

This press release is an absolute joke! As well as the current revenues from the salmon "conservation stamp" the feds should pay retroactively for moneys misappropriated and used elsewhere!
h.e.h.

Even when we had Anderson in who was a local west coaster he ended up a jack butt! And did zip for us here. Enjoy it while you can boys and girls cause your great grand kids will not have the opportunity to set Salmon unless it's from a lice manufacturing farm. Thanks Harper you CLOWN The P C government is smokin crack !

must be getting close to an election. they've done 10 times more damage with their policies then they've done good. imho.

Even when we had Anderson in who was a local west coaster he ended up a jack butt! And did zip for us here.

If nothing else, he closed the Coho fishery for 10 years and the results are impressive.
I think without that move, we would have no Coho today.

Sure they are congratulating themselves for something already done-can you say election!! We have a right to be irritated -its a game!! In fairness though it was the right thing to do and should have been done long ago--soooooo Why didn't the Liberals do it??? We all may dislike Harper for various and sundry reasons but the right thing did get done. Wish I could see more positive things happening but it's like paint drying>>>

I think the key point to keep in mind here is that while this $1M/yr commitment is a step in the right direction the fact remains that it is a drop in the bucket when compared to the cuts that have been made to DFO staff/scientists/etc who should be leading the charge when it comes to resource management and conservation. The feds throw out this $1M bone to distract us from the hundreds of millions of dollars of cuts to environment/wildlife research/conservation/enforcement/etc. The record speaks for itself.

It reminds me of some of the world's biggest polluting companies in the oil & gas/mining/tobacco/forestry industries who do a big press release about their support of some small scale feel good project while continuing to do so much more harm behind the scenes. They throw out these little distractions from time to time just to get some people to think they are doing good and most people who don't have the time/interest to dig any deeper probably think "hey, they do some bad stuff here but they did some good stuff over here so it's a wash", which is exactly what their intentions are.
