Halibut charter operators consider legal challenge

Associated Press - May 21, 2009 1:24 PM ET

KETCHIKAN, Alaska (AP) - Southeast Alaska fishing charter operators may file a legal challenge to a new federal rule that would limit their clients' catch to one halibut per day.

The rule kicks in June 5.

An organization representing charter operators, Charter Halibut Task Force, successfully blocked a similar one-halibut rule last year.

The group has begun raising money for a similar court challenge.

Charter operators say cutting the limit from two fish to one per angler will devastate their businesses.

Commercial halibut fishermen have pushed for the rule. They say the charter fleet has grown unchecked and has consistently harvested more than its assigned maximum catch.
