Good Luck IFS, by Bob Hooton

Catastrophic mismanagement of an iconic species.

For those FN that are onside with pushing selective means...how many are upper Fraser vs Lower Fraser....I suspect the greed of the lower Fraser is preventing any sort of progress here....along with spineless dysfunction in government of course...

Then lets start with selective (Fish wheel) projects with those FN in the upper Fraser. Perhaps that can be how change can come about on the lower Fraser.

Upper Fraser bands already use selective methods such as dipnetting and rod and reel. Most of the upper Fraser bands absolutely HATE the lower Fraser bands because of their greed, waste and non traditional gillnet use.

The Skeena and lower Fraser First Nations band should take a page out of how the upper Fraser bands do things!
But they won’t....how else will they they make $

As for the selective methods of beach seining in the lower Fraser....they might as well use a gill net. Same result.
Just go to mountain bar or Jespo and watch the bloodbath.

Absolutely true. Up river bands are always the first to impose fishing and hunting bans on their people.

Attached here is another excellent and revealing media account of how the endangered Interior Fraser Steelhead find themselves still subjected to the same forces that have brought them to the brink of extirpation. We should all be thanking the BCWF's Jesse Zeman for holding DFO's feet to the fire through all of this.

If I might offer one mild criticism of the article it would be the pink salmon fishery has not been the primary issue in recent years. Instead, it's the chum salmon fishery that follows. That fishery overlaps to a greater extent with the IFS run timing than does the pink fishery. Also, chum roe is far more valuable than any product derived from pinks, including roe. First Nations fisheries now dominate that chum roe fishery, thus the push for methods other than notoriously non-selective gill nets to conduct those fisheries.

The rejection of the application for funding of a well researched proposal for a selective fishing demonstration project stands testament to DFO's continuing support of fishing practices certain to push IFS and many other stocks to come further down the extirpation path.

Lest anyone think the province is committed to saving IFS, you might want to consider a couple of critical points. One is that Premier Horgan's chief of staff is a well known commercial fishery advocate with a long history of association with that industry. The other relates to which provincial Ministry calls the shots on steelhead. Forests Lands Natural Resource Operations and Rural Development Minister Donaldson claims responsibility. His principle advisor on the steelhead portfolio is a licensed commercial gill netter. The real steelhead voice of the province is Minister Popham of Agriculture. Her ministry is responsible for licensing the shore based commercial fishing processors and facilities. In all the joint announcement and press releases from DFO's Wilkinson, you'll note that it's Popham that prevails on behalf of the province even if Donaldson shows up.

Message received.

Oddly enough, Min of Ag barely shows up in the 1907 pages of FOI material. I’m guessing those conversations would have been conducted via telephone.
