Four Tonnes Of Salmon Confiscated From Poachers In Russian Province

PETROPAVLOVSK- KAMCHATSKY, July 30 (Bernama) -- Policemen in Kamchatka have confiscated four tonnes of salmon fishes from poachers while the fish is being carried from the fishing area to Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky.

The consignment of fish were seized when the truck drivers failed to present any documents confirming the origins of the consigment to the police.

Quoting the press service of the Kamchatka territoy's Interior department, Russia's Itar-Tass news agency reported Wednesday that the fishing of Pacific salmon is in full swing in Kamchatka now, as the salmon comes to the local rivers and lakes for spawning during the second half of the summer.

Annually, authorized producers produce dozens of thousands of tonnes of salmons, and delicacy salmon roe, which is known as Red caviar in Russian and some other countries.

Official trading provides an important source of revenues to local budgets of all levels.

However, poachers working alone or in whole cartels become especially active in this period of time, too, and the authorities also register production of fish and caviar above the authorized limits by authorized companies.

The Federal Service for Veterinary and Phytosanitary Supervision instituted 32 criminal cases last summer over offenses in the fishing industry and issued fines totaling more than 8.5 million rubles (US$362,383).

So far, the Northeast branch of Russia's Coastal Guards detained 15 ships that engaged in illegal production of salmon and opened 2 criminal and 107 administrative cases in this connection.

The service also levied fines totaling 11.2 million rubles (US$477,493).
