Man Convicted for Breach of Newfoundland Fishery Regulations for Retaining Large Salmon

November 25, 2014 – St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador

Jeffery John of Gander has been fined for catching and retaining a salmon longer than 63 centimetres.

Mr. John was convicted on October 21 in Gander Provincial Court. He was apprehended with a salmon longer than 63 centimetres on the Gander River near Glenwood on July 18.

Penalties

Fined $1000 to be paid within one year
Forfeiture of one salmon, one fishing rod, reel and line
Prohibited from recreational fishing for one year

That is pratically a grilse! Do you suppose anyone in nfld can afford to pay that?
Did that extinct the race?
Perhaps a lawyer could have argued it was a escapee from Alaska or Norway?
 
the regs are pretty strict back east. don't think you can even catch or retain lobster unless your commercial... at least you couldn't where my wife grew up in nova scotia...
