Elwha River Chinook return

http://www.peninsuladailynews.com/news/scientists-optimistic-about-return-of-chinook-to-elwha/

Such a great story/project with such huge potential. Each year that goes by it should get stronger and stronger.

It’s painful to see the contrast in habitat restoration spending between the US and Canada....

There was also the removal of the Condit dam on the White salmon River that as really cool because they blew a hole in the base of the dam.

There is an even bigger dam removal project in the works on the Klamath, which hopefully gets going in a couple of years https://www.redding.com/story/news/...m-removal-persists-approval-nears/1523718002/

And now with the SRKW issues there is renewed pressure to remove dams on the Snake.

We should remove the dam on the Jordan River. There used to be large salmon runs before they damned it.

Also need to remove the 1 km log jam on the San Juan River that irresponsible logging companies and BC Govt. left behind for others to remove!

If we want/need to feed starving orcas then we need to undo some of the damage we have done to the rivers that produce the food they eat.

Columbia river salmon returns should be massive compared to that of the fraser river. Massive bio masses sitting behind dams, arrow lake sockeye ect...

maybe the best thing canada ever did was not damn the F out of the fraser river...

My understanding is the only the reason they didn’t is that it is way too silty.

I worked at the plant that removed the sediment from the water, Its been amazing to watch it come back.

“Damnation” on Netflix is worth a watch.

Good flick. I’ve been following this story since the pre-removal surveying and scientific baseline studies. Every year around this time I’m hopeful of stories of more and more fish returning.

Any idea how the White Salmon river responded? The condit dam demo was amazing to watch!
