Subject: FN0627-RECREATIONAL - Salmon - Area 14 - Baynes Sound - Chinook Salmon Opportunities

The fall Chinook returns to the Puntledge River are expected to exceed spawner
requirements. The following local recreational fishery opportunity for Chinook
salmon is being provided:

Effective 00:01 hours August 20, 2010 until 23:59 hours December 31, 2010, in
the following areas, the daily limit for recreationally caught Chinook salmon
is two (2) per day, minimum size limit of 62 cm:

-Subarea 14-11 [Baynes Sound inside a line from the Cape Lazo light, then to
the P-54 Bell Buoy on Comox Bar, then to Longbeak Point, then to the mouth of
Hart (Washer) Creek].

Notes:
Sport anglers are encouraged to participate in the Salmon Sport Head Recovery
program by labeling and submitting heads from adipose fin-clipped (Hatchery
Marked) chinook and coho salmon. Recovery of coded-wire tags provides critical
information for coast-wide stock assessment. Contact the Salmon Sport Head
Recovery Program at (866) 483-9994 for further information. The location of
the Head Recovery Depots can be found at the following site: http://www.pac.dfo-
mpo.gc.ca/fm-gp/rec/tag-etiquette/prize-prix-eng.htm.

Anglers are requested to release any hatchery marked sockeye. These fish are
hatchery raised sockeye and part of a recovery program designed to increase the
numbers of Cultus Lake and Sakinaw Lake Sockeye.

The term "hatchery marked" means a fish that has a healed scar in place of the
adipose fin.

Barbless hooks are required when fishing for salmon in tidal and non-tidal
waters of British Columbia. This includes all species of fish in the Fraser
River.

There will be hatchery staff and volunteers taking DNA samples from angler's fish. Please cooperate with thier requests for samples. The samples are important if we want the early opnings to continue.

Yes good news for the fall chinook returns, but I think 14-11 should be all or nothing, Coho is not open until 01 Sept. Another question, why is one wild Coho allowed in 14-11 after 01 Sept, but not the rest of the strait? ie Kitty, where they are getting slaughtered while looking for hatches?

Rob as long as your releasing them properly and not netting them etc etc they shouldnt be getting slaughtered... I dont even barely take em out of the water just long enough to slip one hook outa there yap.

Because of the large number of unmarked Puntledge hatchery fish that stage there to head up the Puntledge.
