Just received the DFO fence cumulative report for Cowichan River.

Coho returns are showing 2022 returns: 1,476.
Coho returns for 4-year average is 23,390

South Van Is fish returns are almost down everywhere.

Subject: FN1317-Recreational - Salmon - Coho - Region 1 - Cowichan River - Coho Management Measures - Effective immediately, 2022
As a result of the above-average returns of Cowichan Coho, below details the in-season changes to the management measures on the Cowichan River.
Effective immediately until 23:59 hours December 31, 2022, the daily limit for Coho Salmon is one (1) per day (hatchery marked or unmarked), in the following area:
Cowichan River - from 66 Mile Trestle downstream to the tidal water boundary
Variation Orders: 2022-RFQ-523
Notes:
Barbless hooks are required when fishing for salmon in tidal and non-tidal waters of British Columbia.
Anglers are further reminded that intentionally (willfully) foul-hooking fish or attempting to foul hook fish is illegal and that non-compliance may result in closure. Foul hook is defined as: hooking a fish in any part of its body other than the mouth.

The term “hatchery marked”, “marked”, or “adipose fin clipped” means a fish that has a healed scar in place of the adipose fin.

The final run estimate won’t be available until early in the New Year. As the notice states, the run is anticipated to be above average this year. DFO has upped its game dramatically wrt coho assessment in the Cowichan in the past 5 years. It’s a good thing.

The Cowichan River Coho fishery is a sustainable opportunity based on what I think is the largest unenhanced coho run on the island. Go enjoy it with a clear conscience and bonk one for dinner if you get a chance and are so inclined!

Walked the bottom of the canyon today and watched a number of older coho cruise by. Released a couple of small, dark females. Had a few shiny ones swipe and miss. It's funny how "low" water on the Cowichan is still a pretty decent flow. Second photo was nabbed from a video, hence the crap quality. Cool to see 'em jumping.

Was there yesterday as well way above skutz beautiful morning for sure
Targeting browns and couldn't keep small cohos (I imagine they're jacks) off while dead drifting egg imitations
Amazing how good of shape they can be that high up above skutz unfortunately no pics of the fish but I gots this nice sunrise
