Commercial fishing

I thought as long as we are looking at various sectors, we might discuss what we know to be true about commercial fishers. How are they paid, how is EI determined (gross revenue vs. net income) and what is the perceived and actual value to the economy?

I don't have a lot of input to it except to say that I beleive EI to be determined by gross revenue from fishing and not net income - a commercial fisher can lose money and still collect EI, which they do. Seems t obe a dead drag on the whole system.

When I was longlineing for halibut, each day couunted as 2 for ui.You always worked at least 16 hours per day.It also sucks cause when your waist deep in 5000lbs of hali, you gotta get them on ice asap. You get paid crew share,% of total catch -food,expenses,fuel,captain usually gets a double share, boat share, advances, lost gear and so on...what ever is left is yours, sometimes lots, sometimes not
