Cleaning Crabs in the Boat

The Regs state, "When transporting a recreationally-caught crab, the carapace (shell) must remain attached to the body of the crab until consumed or it arrives at a person's ordinary residence. It is prohibited to have shelled or shucked crab in your possession, except at your ordinary residence."

I clean crab in the boat and keep the lids (carapace) in a separate garbage bag in case I get stopped by a Fisheries Officer, which I have. The Fisheries Office had no problem with that and agreed that it was better than making a mess at home.

Anyone else have a similar experience?

What to the guides do? Do they send their client's crabs home whole or cleaned?

I have a friend-ex-Mountie got a 50 dollar ticket for doing just what you described. it is against the law and you were lucky!

Key word is "attached".

So basically keep the legal males live and put them in a cooler live till you get home?? Just curious how everyone transports them. Live with ice in a cooler was my thoughts??
