Subject: FN0207-Chinook: Areas 19 and 20 - Recreational Fishery Regulation Changes

Additional management measures to reduce harvest impacts on Early Timed Fraser
River Chinook stocks are currently in effect in portions of Areas 19 and 20
during the period of March 11 to May 15, 2008.
These measures currently allow a daily limit of two (2) wild or hatchery marked
chinook salmon between 45 cm and 67 cm in length in Subareas 19-1 to 19-4 and
Subarea 20-5 (Those waters near Victoria between Cadboro Pt to Sheringham Pt).
Refer to Fishery Notice FN0131 dated March 07, 2008 for further details.
As of April 1, the retention of hatchery marked Chinook that are greater than
67 cm in length will also be permitted as described below.
Effective 00:01 hrs Tuesday April 1, 2008 and until 23:59 hrs Thursday May 15,
2008 the daily limit is two (2) wild or hatchery marked Chinook salmon between
45 cm and 67 cm in length or hatchery marked salmon only that are greater than
67 cm in length in Subareas 19-1 to 19-4 and Subarea 20-5 (those waters near
Victoria between Cadboro Pt to Sheringham Pt).
The Department is seeking additional information from sport anglers for this
fishery. The Department will be distributing information sheets to a number of
locations (e.g. DFO Office in Victoria, head depot sites, marinas, tackle
shops) to outline the regulations for this fishery and identify the additional
information that the creel surveyors will be requesting from anglers. If
interviewed, anglers will be asked to provide the location (Subarea), length &
mark status of all Chinook kept and released.
Anglers are encouraged to participate in the voluntary Salmon Sport Head
Recovery program by labeling and submitting heads from adipose fin-clipped
Chinook and coho salmon. To associate head recoveries with this mark selective
fishery it is essential to provide the capture location (Subarea) and length of
the fish. Recovery of coded-wire tags provides critical information for coast-
wide stock assessment. Contact the Salmon Sport Head Recovery Program at (866)
483-9994 for further information.
Notes:
Barbless hooks are required when fishing for salmon in tidal and non-tidal
waters of British Columbia.
Anglers are requested to release any hatchery marked sockeye. These fish are
hatchery raised sockeye and part of a recovery program designed to increase the
numbers of Cultus Lake sockeye.
The term "hatchery marked" means a fish that has a healed scar in place of the
adipose fin.
Rockfish Conservation Areas that are currently in effect and are closed to all
fin fishing. Descriptions of these closures, and other recreational fishing
information, can be found on the Internet at:
