Beginning at 9:30 a.m. Friday, November 6, the Sport Fishing Institute of BC (SFI) is hosting a series of virtual webinars to discuss recovery of salmon stocks and predictable opportunity and reliable access for BC’s public fishery. Each of 4 weekly sessions will be approximately 90 minutes long, with an audience question and answer period following each presentation, and will cover topics within this year’s theme, Charting a Predictable Path for Salmon and BC’s Public Fishery.

While a new approach and virtual in 2020, this annual event has become a key forum where elected officials, public servants and those in the sport fishing industry can meet and share their perspectives on trends, innovations and issues facing BC’s public fishery.

Attendance is free but you must register here in advance for each session.

Something this important should be recorded and available to view after the session is over. Does anyone know if it is Searun, Derby?

5 mins into the meeting and rebecca reid is quoting government talking point. what a political pawn.

Ms. Reid toted the government line as expected.
The FN's get the lion's share, and that is the way it is. Made a point of numerous mentioning of UNDRIP and the government's overwhelming desire to fall into step with that.
Area closures will continue FAR into the future (apparently with little or no regard to threatened/endangered stock encounter rates).
And platitudes / lip service towards any other issue of import.

Dr. Walters was a breath of fresh air.
Clearly and concisely spelled out the research and data which demonstrates the largest impacts to salmon stocks are pinnipeds, and addressed several related misnomers while doing so.

WELL worth the watch!

Cheers,
Nog

his presentation was pretty conclusive but like he said it falls on deaf ears outside the hunting and fishing communities.

I missed the bulk of her presentation as I am at work but I saw some of the Q&A and her answers to the questions could not have been weaker

I was able to catch the first 10 or 15 minutes of Dr. Walters presentation before work duties called again and was really enjoying it. I will definitely be looking to watch the rest whenever it is available online

Yes, been asked this question a few times. Once all 4 seminar sessions have taken place, the plan is to create a link where you can select which one you wish to view. So look for that in early December or thereabouts.
Thanks Pat!

Was she in the same position under mr harpers government ? Curious if change of government could mean she gets tossed

She is one of those Bureaucrats that survive each successive government shift.
Ministers sometimes think they run the show.
Mostly, they don't, and it is long term self preserving trough snouters like Reid that do.
Always been a rather poor situation, which appears to be getting worse as we march forwards (or is that backwards?)

She was quoting PMO speaking notes, under a different government she would quote Thoes that’s how they survive.

Under a conservative government she would have a different set of notes and mandates. She would toe the line with Thoes as well.

Rebecca Reid was excruciating. All politics. Even skirted a serious question about FN Chinook harvest in the Fraser while rec fishers twiddle thumbs in the name of conservation - even in her non-response she admitted not all Chinook are the same....which is true in the Fraser which is a non terminal river fishery...but somehow she still made it seem like it’s all good. FN can take what they want regardless. Carl was great but like another poster said couldn’t watch it all with work commitments!

All and all I thought it was pretty well done. Good to see the giant leap in technology to get the message out. Many thanks to all those who made this possible.
