An extensive search is underway for the operator of a 14-foot aluminum boat found adrift off the coast of Sidney on Tuesday.

The identity of the missing man, who is from the Victoria area, was not being released at this time.

His vessel, which was equipped with a small outboard motor, was discovered shortly after 5 p.m. by two jet skiers in the waters between Sidney and Sidney Spit. Found aboard the red dinghy was the operator’s boating gear and his pet dog. The owner’s personal flotation device was not found onboard.

“We have some communication from a relative that his dog had jumped in the water earlier in the day, so perhaps the dog jumped in the water again and he tried to recover it,” said Andy Howell, a Coast Guard officer and search and rescue coordinator with Joint Rescue Coordination Centre, which is manned by Canadian Forces and Canadian Coast Guard personnel.

“Or perhaps he’s on an island somewhere and the boat got away. We’ve searched the area so hard that doesn’t seem likely to me.”

A number of helicopters and vessels from the area are involved in the search, which is expected to last into the night, Howell said. “It’s small area and we’ve got lots of resources, and the conditions are great. We’ve go a lot of guys and we’ll do our best to find him.”

Take only what you need.

There is a lot of boat traffic in that area. I'm surprised that he hasn't been found if he went overboard. Just another reminder to wear your pfd as we never know when something bad will happen. I hope they find this guy and he's ok.

Police are looking for more information about a boater missing since Tuesday afternoon.

"We had reports of a boat that was adrift between Sidney and Sidney Island," said Cpl. Chris Swain of the Sidney North Saanich RCMP. The Coast Guard got the report from a pair of jet skiers shortly after 5 p.m. Tuesday (May 12) evening that a small boat was adrift in that area. The Coast Guard located the 14-foot red aluminum Lund with a small outboard. A dog and some personal items were found aboard the vessel.

"Our investigation started right away," Swain said. "Ever since that time last night the search has been ongoing … We think we know who it is, we've contacted the family."

The boat had one occupant, a 46-year-old man from Victoria, who is still missing. RCMP are in close contact with his family as part of the investigation. The family has requested that their privacy be respected, and that the identity of their loved one not be released at this time.

The boat was launched from Tulista Park Boat Ramp in Sidney at around 10 a.m. that day and was known to be fishing near Sidney Spit around 4 p.m. that day.

The marine search continued with three Coast Guard Vessels, a Coast Guard helicopter, the Sidney Island Marine Park Boat and the James Island Security boat. Saanich Peninsula Search and Rescue assisted with a search of surrounding shorelines, both near Sidney and on adjacent islands as the search stretched into Wednesday.

The missing man's family hope that the public will remember seeing the boat or dog, in the Sidney waterfront area on Tuesday, May 12. This information may assist police and search officials in their efforts.

An extensive water, air and ground search was initially conducted, and lasted well until the next day. The ground search of all the surrounding coastlines was completed by several Search and Rescue crews on Wednesday, May 13. The search from air and water continues but the missing person has not yet been located. #8232;RCMP are asking anyone that may have been in the area of the boat ramp, boating in the area or waterfront residents in Sidney that may have seen this boat or its occupant, to call the Sidney North Saanich RCMP detachment at 250-656-3931 and speak with Cst. Brian Fletcher.
