Anchor setup

Fishing and boating are the same in at least one respect: you're always learning, and that's what keeps it interesting. With boating though, what you don't learn may kill you. I've made a few mistakes, but I hope I learned from every one. I've also completed boating course work. Hey, if you're going do something you like, why not try to do it right ...and live long enough to talk about it?

Remember, it's called "fishing," not "catching."

Thanks for the help guys. And ya Wolf, you are a hundred % right about the ocean and how it can nail you. First time out ever, I learned that the hard way. Now I pay attention to the weather etc.

When retrieving the anchor do you make sure it is released by hand or do you run forward and hope it's not stuck.

YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hey i'm trying to learn here.....give me a break. <img src=icon_smile_blush.gif border=0 align=middle>

At any rate the only time i've seen some one with the buoy setup they were speeding away and i assumed they were retrieving the anchor with one of those EZ-retrieve doodads. Hehe...apparently i was wrong.

Yes the guy was using a retrieve system.

The point that I was trying to make from the very beginning of this forum, anchoring and hali fishing is a complecated thing to do(sometimes)especially if you have never done it before and the best way to learn is by "hands on" experience there is just too many things to do and too many things that can go wrong while anchoring and reasons why you do certain things out there.

Good luck Wolf

Not saying I do not saying I dont tried it a couple of times to be honest dont think it matters think location is more important and yes when I did do it I asked DFO first said no problem just as long as you dont have hooks on it now saying that I recall a post last year that said you wernt allowed to do it??????but who knows with the bright minds of dfo what you can do and cant do.

Wolf, while we are on the subject of anchoring for "butts", I know people say to find the pinacle and try to hook on there, like 27 off William Head, but when on Constance, what is the best to look for there. I usually try to find something that comes up to about 160-180, hook on and drift back to over the 200 mark. I would be interested to know what you look for when setting the anchor.

I look for deep waters with pinnacles then try and get right on top of it.

Good luck Wolf

Ive got a question for group regarding anchoring...

Ive got 400 feet of rope...30 feet of chain, and I still dont like to anchor in more than 160ish feet of H2O. Question is, how deep can you go??? I see folks with less rope anchoring in over 200. Makes me worry about slippage. Rarely am I doing the minimum 4 to 1 ratio, but putting in in 200+ feet seems impossible in any current without at least 600 feet????

How deep do you all go, and with how much?

Thanks
