Here is an update from SVIAC regarding decisions from the recent 2020 IPHC AGM Meeting in Alaska.

The 2020 IPHC AGM is almost at an end and the 2020 fishing season details have been voted and apporoved by the commissioners. The voting tally went 4 in favour and 2 against, so it was not unanimous but met the required IPHC majority rules from each country as 2 commissioners from both US and Canada voted in favour. Attached are three images of IPHC tables and a decision framework for the fishery.

FYI - Canada is Area 2B and this years agreed mortality limit for Area 2B is 6.83 million pounds. The public fishery will fish at 15% of that. A rough estimate of the Canadian public fishery catch limit at 15% is 1,025,000 lbs (some very minor adjustments for bi-catch and other mortality calculations need applying before a final number is achieved) Please remember it could have been much lower.

Mega kudos to our Canadian Commissioners as well as all our Conference Board and Processor representatives! Many many thanks for your expertise, passion and hard work on this talented Canadian delegation and doing such a great job for the halibut fishery and all Canadian fishermen and women who benefit from it. GREAT WORK!!!!!

Next week will be busy as there are SFAB Halibut Committee, Groundfish Shellfish Working Group meetings and the SFAB Main Board meeting in Richmond. At those meetings the 2020 public fishery opening date and catch sizes will be decided. I anticipate the hybrid option that we fished under in 2019 will be in place again in 2020. For those who are not versed with the term “hybrid option”, this is new management approach that offers halibut anglers a choice in their possession limit of one fish of a larger size or two fish of a smaller size. I’ll send out details of the 2020 final public TAC and what the approved regulations will be when those decisions have been made.

Thank you for letting me represent you in Anchorage this year.

Regards Chris

Sounds reasonable just hope that the one big fish can go up to say 130-133 ish ??? Not sure if that’s realistic or not. Thanks for putting in all your time with sports fisherman in mind !!
