Tips For Bringing Little Ones Out

Let’s pretend I own a boat. Something like a 20-23’ with a cuddy.
What tips/activities do you do with little kiddos on board? Do they nap in the cuddy? Any extra safety tips?

Mine is only chill strapped into her chair at the table watching Peppa on the tablet. Otherwise she's constantly trying to kill herself.

Ho Ho, very good. Peppa Pig has taken over my world too.
That’s one vote for tablet. Check.

Biggest mistake is going out when its rough. Remember they have 10% of our attention span or less and zero tolerance for safety.

Wait we're talking about wives, right?
Honesty it would be more just the kid and me. Wifey is very particular on glass calm water, outdoor temp 23-25 degrees and 1hr 15mins maximum. Sigh. I got one of those..

Mine doubles as my rear helm screen. Got all the various ram mounts everywhere so the tablet goes where we need it. I also have the keyboard cover so I can do some real work when I go down there in the middle of a work day. Usually that means pulling up YouTube videos for new knots.

Pretty much the same principles apply to wives (mine anyway) and kids. The kids will for sure sleep in the cuddy, and they will open every hatch, valve, switch and anything else they should stay the eff away from. I had no cabin lights for a year, a freaking year, then I realized one of them had flicked the breaker for shore power I very rarely use. Teach them to use the head very early on, it is scary for a little one to have to heave it overboard in the waves. Try and teach them to ALWAYS wear a pfd, and lead that always...yes, I do not always practice what I preach. I also tried to give them a small job to do as routine as well, but stuff happens pretty fast out there so its not always safe to do so. Start out with shorter trips then add on as they get more comfortable.

Save the absolute jackpot of being able to drive the boat with your hands on the wheel as the ultimate reward...

How old are the little ones, make it fun for them nothing I mean nothing will lose them faster and not wanting to go if it’s not fun, get them hooked, don’t make it all about salmon fishing. Go to a warf or a dock and get them to catch piling perch. I remember when I was a kid along time ago my dad would go fishing and he could tell I was bored ( and this was in the seventies and eighties when there was more fish out there) he would all of a sudden pick up the salmon gear, we had one hand crank blue downrigger and those peetz slip weights, and head to a kelp bed and fish for any type of cod, we would fish for and hour and then go back for salmon. Fast forward thirty years when I had kids I kept that going with my kids and nephew we kept it fun ( my wife a graphic designer) made a invitation for my nephew for his birthday he was like 7 or 8 and was into sharks made I’m a shark hunting present valid any time. We took him out to catch mud sharks of Tsawwassen. He had a blast he is know 20 and still talks about that. We also caught crab with hooks and a piece of herring. So what I’m getting at it keep it fun. Kids don’t want one fish the want action. Same as trout fishing we go to the interior and fish for Kokanee, but we always go to this one lake for the day and catch and release 30-40 trout in three hour and that’s what they talk about till next year

she’s 2 now but will be Likey be 3 or 4 before I get another tub. Good point on keeping the action coming. Keeping crab traps nearby would be helpful as there’s usually something in them to pull up.

I'm learning that when I'm out with kiddo that the focus needs to be on keeping things fun for kiddo. My kid is 3.5yrs old so pretty short attention span. We went shore fishing last week with his new spin casting rod....all he wanted to do was swish the rod tip in the waves. I cast it out 4 times and he wound it back in right 'til the swivel was in the rod guides, then he wanted to go back home.

My son and I took my granddaughter to Poett nook a couple of years ago. Just the three of us for three days. We all had a great time. We’re lucky that she loves to go fishing and boating. She brought some toys and a coloring book to keep her busy when she got bored.

I’m looking forward to getting my kids out in a month or so when my boat is ready. 6 year old girl, 4 year old boy. I plan on bringing their tablets, lots of healthy snacks and lots of unhealthy ones as well. Short bursts of fishing, a little trolling, a lot of jigging. Dropping the prawn and crab traps. I have a cuddy, I plan on making it super comfy for rest times. I’m thinking more of a wildlife tour with a little fishing and some beach/island exploration.

I bought a boat with a head and bunks and safe to be in and after a few trips wife said this isn't really fun to me. I was really disappointed until I discovered how much more fun it was to be out with good buds for the day or week. You also have the bonus on being able to tell them to **** off without any drama or emotional disaster. They also can back a truck and accurately guide me down a ramp without any unkind words. I now consider myself very lucky she doesn't want to go! She is a great wife of 51 years and both of us are happier with the boat use.

Snacks...snacks and more snacks. Did I mention taking some snacks?

But seriously as mentioned tablets are good for a bit and smoother water is always better.

They will let you know when the trips over so don’t be disappointed when your all day fishing trip is only 35 mins....lol

My kids are 10 and 12 now but both were good when they were young in all honesty. Drop some traps and find a good spot to catch a few rockfish to keep them interested while the traps soak.........

Good Luck! Lol

At first my boy couldn’t handle them but by the end of the trip he managed to land a 15lb feeder spring. Bring lots of snacks and if you can take them onto a beach picking clam shells

Don’t make it too serious. It has to be fun. I almost ruined my daughter when she was little. My son didn’t care he was pretty hard core. My daughter is now 16 and my son is 18 and I love fishing with them and they love it also. Here is a pic on the hook last week

Trust me on this

Until they are 12 years old tell them you are going to work and leave them at home
