Troubling is the person who died last 24 hrs was 40.
Ya - for sure SV. The numbers aren't high - but the under 40 and even the under 30 gang can get quite severe symptoms, as well. This agent is really *NOT* the flu at all - in opposition to the orange orangutan's unsupported and irresponsible assertions.

I wouldn't feel to peachy about the numbers coming out of BC. The province is not testing enough to compare it to other provinces. Currently it is 6th in the country for testing (test per/1 MM).

Many other provinces need to step it up. If it's the public health labs that are the bottle neck, then contract it out Like other provinces have done.

Thank you for your concern but I'll leave that up to Dr. Bonnie Henry. Her plan seems to be working and our province wide sentinel system and focused swat teams seem to have matters in hand. Your province is doing well also considering what's going on with your medical community. That to me shows how much they care about the people of your province.

Yes Boris was wrong about the virus. He had bad advice from his Tory inner circle. He did pivit and now they are doing, like us, what most countries are doing. Personally, I don't think highly of him but that doesn't stop me from wishing him well in his time of need.

If air pollution is a contributing factor than China is definitely lying about the death rate. There are places there that have terrible air pollution

China is now 71st in the world in death rate per million population. That is where you start seeing the lies in their reporting. It helps all countries to deal with the epidemic effectively if they have good information on how it progressed in the early stages of the pandemic.
China misled everyone by playing it down, silencing doctors who initially reported it and then expelling journalists.
What a unconscionable government. I really hope we come out of this by relying less on them and that their Made in China 2025 goes the fudge right out the window. We need to become self sufficient to a much larger degree

Yes these press conferences are worth watching. I have read a few reports on the CBC that seem to be OK like this one.

We are all lucky to have Dr. Bonnie Henry here in Canada. FYI she was chair for the task force for Canada's Emergency Pandemic Plan. I guess we could say she wrote the book on it.

If anyone wants a good picture of what is actually happening in BC, have a look at Iceland. They have close to the same number of cases, 20 times less deaths, 15 time less hospitalizations... Or thereabouts.

Therefore, we can infer BC likely had around 10-20 times the number of actual vs confirmed cases. If we assume Iceland is only capturing 50% of cases, that means possibly 30-60k infected in BC.

If true, does this suggest a genetic predisposition to C-19 (similar to sickle cell anemia)?
Does it also expose the futility of comparing countries and using masks?
As of 5 April, 1,824 out of Chicago's 4,680 confirmed Covid-19 cases were black residents, said city officials on Monday.
That compared with 847 white, 478 Hispanic and 126 Asian Chicagoans.
Chicago has seen a total of 98 deaths as of Sunday, with 72% of them black residents.

For me - sensitivity is NOT related to scientific vigour or trustworthiness. 2 very different things. I also think there is a real danger in confusing belligerence with leadership as well - as Trump is unfortunately demonstrating in the states. I think that for whatever the reason is - BC is doing better than other Provinces.
Understood w.r.t. W vs B. What about the Hispanic and Asian numbers?
Hopefully those doing the research will not let one reality (race bias) override investigating the other (genetics).
It may be genetics - or - alternatively - it has more to do with socio-economic factors. If you own your own transportation instead of having to take public transportation and you work in a job that has less social contact than other front-line jobs (cashiers, bus drivers nurses, etc.) - your risk of contacting the corona virus would be expected to decrease. One would also need to disentangle these compounding effects to do any such genetics study...

BC's largest portion of deaths was from old folks homes ( clusters ) who are the most vulnerable. I think there are so many variables from province to province, country to country. At the end of the day isolation and self distancing is the only option to stop the spread. BC seemed to take it very seriously and we had the ability to learn from other countries that were in it well ahead of us. When you look at places with packed beaches etc people are either oblivious to the reality or they don't care about the elder or health compromised. Sure hope BC's trend continues and the balance of the world follows suit shortly and we can put this disastrous pandemic behind us all. Definitely makes one reflect and see what's important, so easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of life, kind of a reset.

So, we can get skunked  as long as we do it on our own:

Subject: FN0358-General Information: Information for BC Recreational Fishers on the Coronavirus (COVID-19)

Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) is keeping the health and well-being of all
Canadians in mind as we work together in an effort to slow the spread of the
new coronavirus (COVID-19). To slow the spread of COVID-19 we ask that
recreational fishers keep a physical distance between each other. Physical
(social) distancing is proven to be one of the most effective ways to reduce
the spread of illness during an outbreak.

DFO is supportive of the updates and changes that were announced by the
Province of British Columbia regarding recreational fishing in BC at the
following webpage:
https://www2.gov.bc.ca/gov/content/sports-culture/recreation/fishing-
hunting/fishing-and-hunting-covid-19-updates

The Provincial announcement provides specific guidance for angling activities,
including but not limited to:
-Only fish with members of your family or others you are living with.
-Maintain physical distancing (2 metres or 6 feet) from other individuals you
come across.
-Do not share vehicles with individuals outside of your family or others you
are living with.
-Fish locally.
-Wash your hands frequently, especially around communal areas such as boat
ramps, gates, etc.
-Adhere to all travel advisories and self isolation requirements.
-Adhere to all municipal, First Nation community, Provincial and -Federal
closures (e.g. parks, infrastructure, etc.).
-Many BC Parks and recreation sites are closed. It is suggested to check ahead.
-If you are not confident you can meet all of these conditions, please postpone
your trip.

Fishers should follow the above mentioned Provincial guidelines and be reminded
that all Federal and Provincial angling regulations and licencing requirements
are still in effect.

DFO’s Conservation and Protection Program continues to provide a critical
function in the Federal Government’s management of Canada’s marine resources.
Regular integrated patrols by fishery officers on land, sea and air are
ongoing.

Fisheries, Oceans and the Canadian Coast Guard is committed to supporting our
fisheries and aquaculture industry during these difficult times. The Government
of Canada is taking the necessary steps to keep you informed of the latest
developments.

public, see official advice on the Coronavirus (COVID-19) page
