Another one bites the dust.

Following the announcement from the provincial government Thursday afternoon directing the cancellation of all events with more than 250 people, Kelowna's annual BC Interior Sportsman Show has been cancelled.

The show was set to run at the Capital News Centre from April 3-5, before the direction by the government to help slow the spread of the COVID-19 virus..

“It is unfortunate, as the show was shaping up to be our best show to date, with incredible speakers, demos and exhibitors geared around hunters, fishermen and outdoor enthusiasts,” said Rosanne Ting-Mak Brown, show producer.

“The health, safety and well-being of our employees, exhibitors and guests remain our top priority and we are following the lead of both the B.C. and Canadian Public Health Authorities at this important time.”

The cancellation comes as dozens of events across the province are being cancelled. On Thursday, provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry could not say how long such measures will stay in place, only saying it could be weeks, or even months.

Ting-Mak Brown says the popular event will be back in April 2021.

Canada's First Coronavirus Vaccine Made In Saskatchewan Is Now In Testing Stages

While the world is making monumental changes in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic, a vaccine is being worked on in Canada. And now, a Saskatchewan coronavirus vaccine is officially in the testing stages. Although there is still a long road ahead for human use, officials are working hard as more grant money comes in.

Back in January 2020, it was announced that the University of Saskatchewan received permission from the Public Health Agency of Canada to start working on a vaccine for COVID-19.

Since then, researchers have been accepting grants to help the process along.

While it could take up to a year to complete, CJWW has confirmed with the University of Saskatchewan’s Vaccine and Infectious Disease Organization-International Vaccine Centre that the vaccine is now being tested on animals.

As of now, there is no timeline as to when it could be ready for human use.

Volker Gerdts, CEO and Director of VIDO-InterVac, told CJWW that everything learned from the first SARS outbreak gives the researchers an idea of what the vaccine will have to look like.

He also added that as they are now a few weeks away from finishing research stages, he is positive the vaccine will work.

Once the animal testing is complete, the research team will then need to send any viable vaccine away for clinical studies before being confirmed as safe for humans.

This massive milestone comes just after an announcement that the Saskatchewan research team was granted almost $1 million to develop the coronavirus vaccine.
According to a press release posted on March 6, the VIDO-InterVac team was part of a $2.67 million federal rapid research funding initiative aimed at contributing to global efforts for combating COVID-19.
This money will then help the 12-person team develop the best suitable vaccine.
According to the researchers, animal models are helping scientists to evaluate vaccines, antiviral medications, and drugs to protect animals and humans.

“The global race is on to find out which is the best animal model for replicating the disease observed in humans. Is it mice, hamsters, or ferrets? Whichever model works best is the one we’re going to use. Once the model is developed, we will then be able to test our vaccine candidates for effectiveness,” said Gerdts in the press release.

“We will make the models available to other investigators who have leading candidate vaccines, antiviral drugs and immunity-boosting therapies.”

Numbers of infected individuals are on the rise and as of March 12, the first child in Canada was diagnosed with COVID-19 in Calgary.

It is estimated that up to 70 percent of Canadians could be impacted by the pandemic, should it not be contained.

And the absolute madness continues. Has anyone looked at the real facts, why the hell is the world gone crazy??? I could understand if zombie apocalypse was upon us and death rate was substantial from all infected but there has NOT even been 5000 deaths yet? Look at the facts. Vic major wants to ban all cruise ship visits. Schools in Ont have extra 2 week break. Now we have Trudope self quarantined, what better way to bury your head as the leader. Don't worry, all can stay home self quarantine and Trudope will pay for all that ails you. I need to get to Africa early so I can self quarantine with my PH.

The madness continues.

The reason for the concern is that the infection rate increases exponentially. Once it gets to a certain point the patients requiring intensive care overwhelm the resources available.
There was an analogy made to me, imagine there is a pond that starts filling up with invasive Lilly pads, no one pays attention until it’s about half full and there is a call to action. The next day the whole pond is full of Lilly pads and it’s too late.

I'll politely disagree with you on Sam's yapping about Trump being a waste of time. Trump owns a huge part of how Covid19 has and will spread across North America. He cut major US programs whose exact function was to prepare us for this. He's also spread false info for past few months in order to 'protect' the market / economy. This is now coming back to bite him in the butt and ultimately cost many people their lives so he should not be unscathed for his poor leadership on this file.
Definitely valid points there, I just find that Sam is fixated on Trump to the point that I can no longer distiguish what parts are just his obsession with Trump's moral stature and what are legitimate objections. I don't personally trust his take on Trump because I think he wouldn't fact-check accusations about the guy very carefully and I have spent so much time listening to him on that particular subject that I tune completely out every time he comes up. But no question, this is poor leadership on the file (something Canadians can recognize all too easily at the moment, unfortunately).

I think it will affect catch numbers. Won't be as many US boats out there, or even US guests at lodges etc. By July it will have plateaued and possibly even died down, especially considering measures taken now, but people need to plan out trips, and right now is when they are doing it so they just won't plan one just in case. I say you'll see lower catch limits, just a guess, kind of depends on where this coronavirus thing goes in the next 3 months though.

The show in Edmonton was cancelled as well. The day before we were planning our annual trip to go see it. I feel for the exhibitors though, they were all set up and ready to roll, city canceled it opening day.

Fairly sure the Salt Lake City ISE show we go to every year next weekend is cancelled as well...not officially yet but sounds like it will be official shortly.

Two ways this could go as far as visitors go. If the virus hangs around longer than we think it will kill our tourism season and I’ll be riding my motkrbike a lot this summer instead of fishing with guests. If it burns out by May and the all clear is given...I think a lot of people will be ready to get out and resume life after a few months of laying low. The other factor to consider is that many people are going to be layed off and when work resumes they may not be able to financially justify more time off for a summer holiday this year. Fingers crossed but not going to invest much money in this season.

My wife and I are home cooks, we are not packaged food people. We went to town today to get a few fresh vegetable but ended up with a cart full do to the shortage and coming shortage of a few staples. The grocery stores in our area are going nuts. Very little flour left so we bought flour and sugar and salt which the salt was all but gone, we had to settle for a few smaller containers. It’s not that we are planning on boarding up the windows but stuff is leaving the shelves and if this thing keeps going when you need a product it won’t be there. Think ahead folks, especially those that live out of the grocery store and don’t have a full freezer of wild meat and game like we do. Don’t be freaked out but don’t be ignorant to what’s happening around you either.

Similar lineups at Kamloops and Kelowna Costcos last couple of days apparently. People’s selfishness (wrt hoarding at times like these) never ceases to amaze me!

Cheers!

Ukee

I would not blame it all on hoarding, there are some people that eat out most of their meals that are just stalking up there fridges to the same levels that most people have.

We have merged a couple of threads into this one so we limit the conversation around the Corona Virus to one area. We also edited the thread title slightly to acknowledge what the content reflects. Any discussion of politics that will derail the main focus of the thread will be deleted immediately as it always ends in an endless debate that solves nothing.
