Very well said GLG
Almost all the Fraser stocks are in pretty **** poor conditions and not getting better.

Or all FN to step away from netting that will be starting in a few weeks for the Fraser early Chinook.
****** how most of the region 3 FN are all for conservation...yet almost all of region 2 FN feel.it is there right to net them even at extinction level returns.

It's not only region 3 FN that are on board, virtually all the bands upstream of Sawmill Creek understand the need for conservation, and that it trumps aboriginal rights. It seems to be different mindset for interior bands, but having said that, I know that a few influential Sto-Lo leaders are aware of this situation, and what the implications are if FN are perceived to be fishing certain stocks to possible extinction levels.

First Nations have asked for Zone Zero management levels for Fraser Chinook stocks, That used to mean a complete shutdown of all fishing activity including in the ocean and pretty much all FSC fishing. I believe they see the writing could be on the wall with respect to sockeye fisheries if chinook stocks continue to fall. 10 + chinook stocks are to be reviewed by SARA should anyone of those get listed, Fishing will be done in Fraser by all parties(it will be illegal to harm them in anyway). The goverment of canada will be able to ignore single stocks going endangered/extinct (like they did cultus, Steelhead ect) but they won't be able to ignore the aggregate of a whole species going extinct.

I'm still optimistic tho, I think will see a bit a rebound this year

Much of the problem starts north of BC. Until we can get some restraint in the Alaska commercial fishing, both BC and all the US states south along the coast are screwed. For us in WA, it's estimated that >70% of all Columbia river bound fish and Gray's harbor bound fish are caught prior to passing the S. end of Vancouver island. I'm sure the same is happening to the Fraser and other runs inland.
