Key Tips To Consistent Mature Chinook Hook Ups

You are way over thinking things not the proper ones anyways have you seen many successful fishermen wear gloves??? putting bait on???

there is ton of info but carry on my friend ...

Good luck Wolf

I always **** on my hands before baiting..really.
Anyways, i used the riggers to set the hooks on some soft bites today. I like it, thanks for the tip!
Not monsters but my first solo doubleheader of the year, both set via scotty:)image.jpg

Roland...here is the best tip you are going to get...I won't give you an Otter Point tip as you lack confidence there. Be at the light an hour before the end of the ebb current (not the tide..the end of ebb flow) and stay there until the flood kicks in. There are other productive periods there but remember that one and stay there. And watch what is happening around you and get to where the action is. (without getting involved with someone else's hookup
Thx Profisher

Scoff at a the published science all you want. The fact remains that a paper was published years agao on the repellent effects of L-serine on salmon in the Journal of General Physiology.

Unless you guys have PH.D’s and have conducted published research which proves this effect wrong I am going to take it into account, along with everything I have learned from you and others on here, Wolf.

There are also plenty of fishing articles which acknowledge the importance of smell and the repellent effect of L-serine. Here are a few:-

If a salmon was smart enough to pick up on L-serine, wouldnt it notice the fancy helmet the anchovy is wearing? Hooks? Flasher? You'd have to wear gloves throughout the entire process of setting up your gear?

I personally like using scent but am more concerned about it when using plastic and metal. Using bait is using scent.

Fish with whatever gives you confidence..... Like wearing sweat pants and a beer t shirt.

Englishman you're falling into the mindset that happens to a log of anglers after a couple of years, they start to over think it. They start messing with adding scents, customizing tackle, black boxes looking for the new latest and greatest yada yada. The angler starts to thinks that the more complicated he makes it, the better the results will be.

The L-serine thing is clearly fact in a lab setting, but did you even read the study? It's done in an aquarium and not with fish that were actively feeding.

L-serine is a non issue, a red herring.

Look around at what others are doing, do you see any of the top sooke guides wearing gloves or anyone else catching fish for that matter? That's all you need to know.

Roland...here is how much thought goes into my daily routine. I have fished the same two colours of glow flashers on my 3 rods, have only changed between 2 teaser heads on one rod and the other two rods I have run the same heads all season. The only daily changes have been new leaders and reties of tandem hooks. I only wear rubber gloves to empty the ports potti and that is to keep the scent off my hands!!!

I only use green haze and purple haze flashers with a black and chrome JDF teaser head that is full of teeth marks and most of the chrome is gone. Have great luck with both.
That being said we can go many hours without a bite and then get 3 in an hour. Right spot at the right time with the right presentation will get you fish.
I have a tackle box of flashers and heads of different colours that I never used. The only thing they caught was me.

Roland your thinking way to hard into all of this. Look at someone like walleyes he lives in Alberta. Look he has only been here a few days and only fishes our area once or twice annual trip. I just saw Sooke reports and he and others are doing pretty well. It is the lack of confidence that is killing you to be honest, and a big expectation. We just fished up in hardy and did Ok considering we don't know area at all. To me that is a good feeling, but we all put years into already fishing/and did some homework before heading up...Your two issues are fish closer to shore (which you don't do) and pick your spots based on what currents are doing..You need to understand what the current will do with the back eddies etc... Find the bait find the fish.

Also maybe stop following everybody..Look at your current chart and anchor yourself before a change...few hours before and few hours after..Maybe your giving up and moving around too much... Just pick your spot and just go with that decision. I think pro fisher just gave you major hint on sheringham.

Also dont just be the bait guy..Lots of hardware works too. I don't use bait all the time?

Anyhow here is a small tip..Any of you that have the silver horde spoons or coho killers dont ever use the kinked hooks that come stock on them. I had a good fish yesterday break it off. This has also happened to chris73 I know and a few others..Learned my lesson! Was pretty ****** and the one hookup that would have topped our day only to fail on s***ty hooks.

What does cooper always say at the end of his show? "Luck is an attitude". And it's true. If you think you're gonna get skunked and you get into a funk, it will become a self fulfilling prophecy.

Fish are caught on all types of gear every day. Use what you have confidence in. When out on the water, get your binoculars out and see what's going on around you and don't overthink it.

No I think it's just about covered. It's far beyond me by now anyways.

My point was its too much to think about,, go back to the first post and re read it. It has enough info in it to consistently catch Chinook. The biggest secret to catching big Chinook,,, there has to be big Chinook in the water to catch. Stick to the basics and concentrate on them and the details that lie in them..
