Brentwood Prawners Beware

Just a heads up, there are some very serious prawn thieves working the Inlet this season. They like to leave single dummy floats amongst big sets,so look for that when setting your traps. Leaving overnight or out of sight is now sadly very risky. I have been lifted too many times already and wont be overnighting any more. Bamberton seems to be a hotspot for the poachers right now.

maybe this is a dumb question, but what is the purpose of the dummy float? Does it just give them a reason to get near your gear?

mmm.... Interesting this is an extremely stupid area for thieves to be working..Mill bay beach is within sight of that spot and can see boats clearly... I would let Mill Bay marina know. I was at beach last night and see a number of guys doing overnight sets...

Last year was bad also. Every night they were out there lifting everyone's traps. Last Monday I put them out at 7 am and picked them up at 1pm and 2 of three sets had been raided. Prawns gone. Judging by the number of prawns in the traps I must have missed them by about an hour. From now on I will sit there and read a book in order to watch over my traps.
It's sad that it comes to that.

Get a few buddies and take turns with a spotting scope from up on the high land around the inlet. Sucks, but it might just take a few afternoons. Bring a book and some beers :))

We were out today with eight 39 inch Ladner traps soaking for 4 hours - Coles Bay to Deep Cove. For the first time ever in many years of prawning we caught absolutely nothing. All of the prawn traps were zap strapped close, so no "thieves" were taking the prawns - the prawn population has suddenly dropped to new lows, just like it has on the mainland.

I got some funky coloured zap straps that I put on all my traps. If someone checks it, I will know. There's not many people out there with orange and pink zap straps ready to hide the evidence.

Not that it helps us catch any crabs or prawns. But at least I can see if anyone has been through it.

Funny-- I had that thought too-- so I bought some of the coloured zaps. I have since found out that others are using them as well.. Great minds think alike-- ??? Guess not !! LOL

Some low life in Campbell River is taking entire crab and prawn rigs- contents and all. I have a pretty good idea who it is. Bow rider type boat that also jigs a lot right along the shore for all the 3" rock cod.
