Nootka Sound 2014 Fishing Reports

Thanks Vanisland. I am staying on Nootka, close to Friendly Cove. Relative to Bajo Reef, where is the T ? It sounds like it is closer to Esperanza.

The T is out from Esperanza. Looks kind like a sideways T or J on the chart depending on what gradient lines you're zoomed into.

Just got home from a week at Tuta. Fishing was slow to start the week. Only got into a couple per day. Last three days have been great. San Carlos or camel have been great in the morning. 26-35 feet hoiss to strange was great in the afternoon to evening 42-56. Bigger springs seem to be coming in aswell. Lots of 20+ and heard of a few 30+

Don't need to spend money on gas to head out to the T right now, most fish are being caught around Ferrer pt and inside Nootka sound. Also I would not suggest anyone take there boat along the tahsis rd right now, its absolutely crap, don't think they are even grading it anymore. If you are going to put your trailer and boat through that punishment make sure you have at least one or 2 spare tires. Spend the extra dollars on gas and launch from Gold river.

About the Tahsis to Gold River Road. Interesting your comments. I drove it yesterday- not so bad. May be what your use to. The road is 47% Paved & the rest is quit good for a gravel road. Would agree if you have a large heavy boat you may be better off to launch. in Gold River (approx 50 minute run to Tahsis) Depending on boat & water conditions. But still drive the pulling vehicle around so you have transportation while you here & if you need to pop the boat out for any reason its here
Interesting we had lots vehicles come into the Marina to day for the long wkend. Everything from a $400,000 motorhome to the other end a smart car. Yes most are pickups & SUVs put a fair amount of everyday autos. Yes & Lots of boats behind at least 1/2 the vehicles. Our parting lot is chucker block Full.
Having said that the trick is slow DOWN. 50-60km per hr. From Gold R. to Tahsis will get you here in about 1hr 15min.
There is lots to see Water Falls, vistas, & Lots MORE + wild life Black Bear, Elke, Deer & More. Slow down the extra 15-20minutes
it is worth the time from the safety standpoint & lots other thing to experience. Relax you're going fishing
If you launch in Tahsis There is no Launch in or out & little or No security issues.

Do not disagree the Chinook are inside on both sides of Nootka Is. Lucky for all of us!! However if you are looking for Ling, Hali & Coho To add to your catch- Esperanza is most likely a better bet. No need to go out to the "T" for that.

Albacore Tuna are very close to our area. Will go take a look/Catch next week

Im heading to Nootka on sunday to guide a group for 4 days. When are you heading to Nootka Paul? Are you staying at Nootka Island Lodge?

Well came home a day early..... With our limits of chinooks 18-24 pounds.

Started Friday with late start and finding out the Boatland in CR was out of bulk ice, so were the the other places we were told to call. $80 later we had a couple coolers half full of ice.

Friday..... Only got to fish the evening so we hit Camel Rock saw only 2 fish caught we caught nothing.

Saturday.... started off at Hoiss Point after seeing very few and small fish being caught we bailed and headed up the Thasis Inlet and out to sea. Limited out in 30-45 mins. Tried for Hali for 2 hours without a taker. Got way to rough so we headed in. Stopped at Couptie fished till 7pm and got nothing. Ran back to Critter at 7pm for the night to find dinner ends at 6pm :(

Sunday..... Headed out past the light house on route to the reef and stopped and decided to drop lines. Fish were coming steady to the boat but way to many 6-10 pound fish so we went back to the light house and the fish seemed to get smaller. Run across to Burdwood and the fishing was incredible with every fish we hooked being over 20 pounds.

The Nog's Needle and chovies was all we need.

Now to go fillet and package some fish

Got to add.... Bagging board at Critter didn't have much on there to brag about beside a few nice halibut 45-60 pounds. Most salmon on it were 10-20 pounds with a couple mid 20's but not many.

Thanks FA for the report. Very useful as I'm leaving for nootka tomorrow night. Can you explain what a Nog's Needle is please? Thank you!

Another interesting thing, fish caught on the outside were orange fleshed and softer then the normal red firm flesh of a gold river fish. Different run I am sure none the less going to be great eating.

Off shore all fish taken were caught deep just off bottom 140-180 ft even the fish at Burdwood were caught on the bottom which was only 50ft :) I love shallow water fisheries

Fish Assassin, you must have been hugging the rocks at Burdwood in 50 feet of water. You gotta like the way they blast it off the clip fishing shallow.

50 feet-don't think you could have got closer-Too bad the kelp is gone there-it was a great guide. Did you get any fish on the bare needle close to shore(shallow) or was it only deep??

Those Nog Needles were killers once again I always fish the bottom so I am not sure what they would had done mid column. Even the bait we ran without a flashers. Had just a blast fishing them slabs. Going to stay local and hammer Kitty Coleman for awhile. There is something to be said about backyard fisheries.

In nootka/esperanza this weekend. 11 of us with limits. Anchovies where the ticket, but hootchies ans spoons where workin as well.

Ferrer and hoist where good spots at 35'. Ferrer was pretty busy, Rosa produced best for us.

Couldn't get out to the T or pinnacles, surf was a bit high for some folks. So we took our white meat from catala island.

Caught one fish off the rigger with flasher, braid and barbed Coho killer hangin from his jaw

Amazing Ferrer Pt is so popular as only small fish allowed and rarely found there at this time of year. A lot of pounding and a lot of gas I your legal
