2020 Vancouver-Howe Sound-Sechelt Reports Thread

Going out tomorrow to Sandheads hoping to find some coho... I know the outside of Vancouver Island they find the coho further out in 500 feet range and 80-100 feet deep .. is this the same at sandheads ... also what is best choves or white hootchie or spoons ?

Cohos are shallow this side of the strait. Just stick to 65' and up. I caught a good sized one on Saturday at Sandheads using anchovies at 60' but it was wild so released it. Hoochies might work too but haven't used hoochies since August ended. Also caught a good sized wild one near Bell Buoy today at 42', also on an anchovy. Again, had to release.

I was going for Chinooks both Sat and today. Unlike yesterday at Sandheads, I was totally skunked today on keeper Chinooks at Sandheads and Bell Buoy.

You are correct. I talk to someone who said they couldn't get enough people to clip. So they just released them all at the hatchery. Iam sure if they ask for help they would get some volunteers.[/QUOTE

Standard hatchery procedure (until this year) has been to only clip 10%. There is now an automated clipping machine )(one) which can do more. I believe it's only being shared by 2 hatcheries so far.

Oh yah forgot to report that I hooked a young seagull when I dropped the lines for an hour while waiting for my buddy at the dock. White hoochie right on the surface. Gaff release at the swim grid. Mom wasn't impressed.

The orcas scared away the fish... the lack of fish scared away the fishermen... At least that was the experience from yesterday... saw lots of boats pack it in early. Hopefully the fishing will pick up again soon.

Put in a couple hours on Saturday at grace, waterfalls and up turnstall and RC lots bait around but no taker was dragging spoons only,

We were there last night amongst 40 boats or so. Dead quiet and smoky. We landed one shaker and never saw a net in 2.5 hours!

This has been a tough year for us rec anglers with all the DFO ********... so it does not come as a surprise to me that first week in September and now on weekends it's a circus on the water and at the boat ramp.... Can definately test your patience at times.... Not sure if it's just me or whether it's happening to everyone... But when the bite is slow and everyone is trolling around for hours and hours without a single bite, I had a recent experience where you could feel everyone on the water getting frustrated at the lack of action on a super slow day(usually shortly after the Orcas come through like yesterday). We hooked up on a nice fish on one of those days and a boat running a course parallel to us about 100 feet away starts to cheer when we hooked up. It was a very classy act as they were genuinely happy that we hooked up since no one else was. Also saw a number of times when guys would give me the thumbs up when I hooked up on a fish and they trolled past me. During these depressing and challenging times like this with covid and the DFO ********, the support and camaraderie and gentlemen like acts of respect is a great to see. I try to do the same when someone else is out there having success even when I am not. To me, this is what fishing is about! It's definately not about the FISH(since it would be cheaper and save us hundreds of hours of our time and thousands of dollars each year if we simply went down to the steveston dock and bought fresh salmon from the commercial guys). It's about the EXPERIENCE. My hats off and a big thanks to those who helped me make my experience and my guests experience memorable on the water in the past few weeks.

Same here. Put in a shift before work yesterday. Troll from T10-SH-back to T10. 4 shakers. First skunk of the short year. Will

Out at SH just landed a 21lb 55ft green skinny g and have had about about 5 shakers. Seen 5 nets in the water been here since 8:30am

Definitely has been lots of positive. But equally negative when it comes to some on the water. Be it lack of experience. Or just plain ignorance. Cutting people off going straight thru the pack with disregard to giving way at all. Each boater should be responsible to communicate and make it safe. Not just plow right thru with reckless disregard then look like you have done nothing wrong. Or say hey look they have a fish on let's go over there instead of giving badly needed fighting room. When u find the tack with the currents cooperation then get pushed off because someone would rather troll with Thier lines sideways and under Thier boat. Again let's flip it to the possitive there has been lots of possitive. One guy hooks up beside us. His driver grabs the net immediately as the battle begins completely ignored driving at full troll speed boat veers towards us. We need to manoeuvre so he doesn't hit us. We get out of way by speed up and turn luckily. He goes to net his fish about 5 mins later. His net wasn't snapped in and basket falls into water fish and all. Oops. Another boat lands a fish in distance. Lines up starts trolling straight thru everyone starting to set lines. I had to go into neutral to make sure he didn't hit us. No giving way etc. His excuse...we just caught a fish. Since when did that matter? It's in the boat couple minutes ago. Give way a bit so we don't collide u dumb butt. Another guy seemed to be on auto pilot setting lines. I gather a guide maybe? I try to give him space but no he is cutting right into our straight line tack and forcing a turn now. He has the nuts to say. Come on guys help me out here help me out. What do you want me to set your lines for you? How do you think it's ok to set a course and not be mindful of others around u. Both boaters are responsible and should work together to make it work. Nuff said. Lots of good out there as well. More than the negative anyways. Gotta be on guard to be safe it is sandheads in prime season after all. How many boats did we tell at that had a fish hit before they saw it. Lol. Atleast half a dozen. Your plug is out! Fish fish! Huh? What? Oh ****!

Fished SH 7-3 , had 3 shakers only, saw a couple nets out, yes did cheer everyone we saw with a fish on, but most of them were released. Long slow day going to try again tomorrow , guys we followed out at 7 am in a center console had a good battle with keeper around 10 am

it’s not ever going to get better the SH season is basically down to 15 days less of you subtract the wind days.

Because of idiots, lineups at launches I haven't been out to the meat market all September. Patience to fish but not for that circus.
Went to superstore bought fish to smoke. Freezer good for another year. Will put my time in and enjoy the days soon. Hopefully there will still be opening for salmon somewhere.

You guys it’s none of my business and I mean this with the best intentions in mind but I see people on here that live on the lower mainland or southern island complain about not having fishing opportunity when only a couple hundred miles from many of you even less for some there are openings all year and lots of opportunities for you with in a very short distance. There’s those of us that think nothing of driving 1400 miles for the opportunity to fish the salt, sometimes more. 2 days just to get there, spend thousands of dollars at it. Take a chance at taking a couple weeks off work and the fish might not even be there. With lots of work and money spent it’s not uncommon for it to run us over $10,000 a trip just for the chance. Please don’t feel your that put out if you can’t get them off your front step. Even at home here it’s not uncommon for us to drive 2 or 3 hours to fish different species of fish, that’s just life. Just be happy and enjoy the days you have.

I pay significantly more in cost of living to be near the water in Vancouver because of what we had. Some food for thought.

I understand that RC I do, there’s a reason some people live there but still, there are opportunities for you just not the ones you’d prefer to have.
