Coming back from Salmon Point. VRO was full of oil. No warning when it blew. What might have been the problem?

I did that with a Johnson 60 hp.
the old three cylinder 2 strokes were volatile,
they ran lumpy and then boom !

There are many reasons why they blow up. Has it ever been over heated in the past? If a head gasket fails or an exhaust jacket gasket, water can get sucked into the cylinder causing super heating of a piston, which will start to seize in the bore and any part of the rotating assembly can brake under the strain.
