Puerto Vallarta 1st Week of April

Hey Gents, I have read some of the threads on fishing out of PV, but wanted to know if there was current info I might be missing.

I'll be staying at the Riu Jalisco in the Flamingo area, right by the marina in Nuevo, north of Marina Vallarata.

Only about a 30 minute cab ride from Punta Mita.

We're pretty flexible on what we go after. My goal would be to get a sail or marlin, like most others I would suppose. I've caught lots of king macks, dorado, cudas, wahoo so I wanted to focus on on sails and the like but I understand that they might not be in the offering this time of year.

A low percentage shot to waste a day going for a sail isn't the best thing as I will be two other guys (my Dad and BIL) that will be happy with almost anything, so I have to balance their needs.

Perhaps an inshore trip would be a better alternative. I am flexible on price depending on what we are going after, from a panga to a Blackfish, doesn't much matter as long as it is the right boat for the job.

If inshore, I would be happy to catch a rooster as I've never caught one before. So if there are areas to key in on for those...

Any thoughts or suggestions would be really appreciated!

Damien,

I was there last Spring Break, third week of March.

Fished with Danny from Marla Sports Fishing out of Punt Mita

http://www.marlasportfishing.com/

He has all options to cover your fishing needs, Blackfin, pangas, inshore, off shore, whatever your group would like

He catches fish that’s for sure, believe he has some of the records for that area on Yellow Fin.

We fished with him for three days and all three were productive days. We were offshore and picked up a couple stripe marlin and some yellow fin and spent some time inshore with the kids and played with dorado, roosters and some fantastic cod.

He won’t take you for a boat ride, pretty solid guy that way.

He was very highly recommended by the guys I fish with in Cabo and he did not disappoint.

Hope that helps

Look forward to hearing about the trip

Cheers

Wade

Iam heading down to PV the first of April too. We’re stay at the Royal Decameron. Haven’t gone fishing while we’ve been there. Wondering what would be around to catch . Thanks. John

John, I took my little spin rod with me the last time we were at the ROYAL DECAMERON. While walking the beach if I saw Roosterfish slashing through bait you can catch and release them. Beauty fish. I took the rod out on those sit on kayaks they have there but no luck. If you walk towards Bucerias by the river mouth.(even if its only a trickle when you are there) You can catch many Rays there on every second cast with a crocodile.

Good point, I will be bringing my Salt Striker travel outfit and some random to give Yak fishing a little.

get your HEP shots,,, don't ask. :(

Yup already have. We usually charter when we head down to Mexico , I haven’t fished from the beach before. Does a guy need to get a license or permit ?

yes a licence is required. the marina shops usually have them.

You only need a license if fishing from a boat, you do not need one for fishing from the beach

You can buy a daily, weekly or annual.

Pretty cheap really

I always purchase prior to getting there just to avoid any hassle. Don’t want to waste any vacation time trying to get a license

Hope that helps

Wade, do you know if they are selling licenses longer than 1 day? It was a problem a month or so ago

Even the most ambitious "fishing calendars" don't give too much positivity towards the Pelagics. A sail or rooster are high on my list as I've never caught one. Don't look to be in the offering in Early April.

Yes there's often as relatively cold current that lies along the Pacific coast March into April and it can really shut things down-lots of places don't like to talk about it/deny it exists/pretend they don't know what you're talking about if you mention it.
