DFO has asked the SFAB that as of April 1st, 2019 it would like to reduce the recreational prawn daily limit to from 200 to 100 per day:rolleyes: ( That is a 50% reduction).

Here is the document and please circulate.

There has been no data given for this change.

Let’s see if all other user groups are willing to take a 50% cut, if not then let’s call them on this BS. Seems DFO= Commercial interests only!

“The commercial prawn harvest is one of the most valuable fisheries in B.C. ...”

Well, at least the DFO “Cork-Soakers” aren’t being subtle about their motivation - money to be made and rec access is getting in the way. Only question now is will the rec sector bend over and willingly take it, claiming we have to “do our part” or will we tell DFO to shove it up their arse unless they present stock data that there’s conservation concerns and, if so, sector harvest/quota data that shows all sectors will share the conservation burden?

Cheers!

I find the tidbit about FSC using commercial traps a bit interesting. What are they implying? just wondering how others read it?

Such ********....once again conservation is no concern or the main agenda here.
Pretty hard to respect any rules or regulations DFO puts forward. With the lack of enforcement on the water at what point are people just going to say screw these ******** rules?

If conservation has nothing to do with it it just shows how we are not respected by dfo and in order for that to change civil disobedience / protests / lawful action (money needed for this one) has to occur and until it does will continue to be punching bag.

I read it as they’re getting a piece of the prawn $ pie, or will be!

Cheers!

Ukee

That's how I read to except that FSC is suppose to be for personal consumption not for $$. Suddenly its becoming increasingly important for FSC because its a more valuable fishery?

Is it more valuable as a food source or a money source?.

I also don't think this measure will materially affect the rec annual catch. At Least the non guided recreational catch,.

Seems like it’s more an allocation concern the. A conservation one

If they want to reduce commercial quota by 50%, and attempt to reduce FSC take by 50%, I'm fine with this. What are the chances of that though?

We follow the rules on my boat, all the new random closures and proposed changes are very scary though and makes a guy want to just carry on fishing doing his own conservation. At this rate BC is gonna be like back east where you can’t fish at all unless you have a commercial license. All that lobster that gets shipped out all over the world and a guy can’t go out and get a little for his family.

This is DFO managing again by perception. Faith Based Science in action - they don't provide any analysis to support their claim that the recreational fishery is out of control - no numbers, no catch data, no comparative analysis to show the commercial catch has been severely impacted by an increasing rec catch. Nothing.

What DFO won't tell you is that in the 1990's they created the problem. They allowed a 300% increase in the number of commercial prawn licenses. They created the over-capacity. Moreover, they allowed a highly mobile fleet to develop with no control over how fast the fleet can move from place to place. So in season, the fast boats can be moved great distances to hit even more areas in a gold rush fishery. No longer are the local prawn fishers encouraged to tend the garden and not over-fish their area. DFO long ago should have put in place area licenses to restrict movement from place to place. Only then would fishers not fish down the prawn population until it was wiped out.

Prawns don't move around, so once you fish out an area it will take a long time for them to come back. These new boats that move around quickly allow a fisher to move very quickly from place to place once they clean out an area with little consequence or skin in the game to properly tend the garden.

So what is happening here is the Commercial catch is crashing due to the Commercial over-capacity, and the only way for DFO to manage their way out of the bed they crapped in, is to take away the rec catch and fill the gap. Its a false economy, and left alone DFO and the Commercial fleet will manage to zero. Only then will we see a fleet rationalization to reduce effort/capacity.

East coast cod fishery is a lesson not learned.

Packing up and going out solo wouldn’t even be worth it anymore.
You’d also need need to bring your neighbor’s kids and get a fishing licence for your dog to make it worth while :’(

Speed pays off apparently!

lol, yes it pays in a gold rush fishery. Now if we can only convince DFO to get those darn sporties off the water so we can get more.
