Strange Bedfellows
Murray delivers: Pork for salmon
The news release is the essence of a senior lawmaker entering a re-election cycle:
"Senator Murray Delivers Hundreds of Millions for King County in 2009 Federal Spending Bill."
Earmarks may be controversial in the "other" Washington, but an ability to bring home the bacon has nourished careers of the bipartisan trio of Washington State senators - Warren Magnuson, Slade Gorton and Patty Murray.

And Murray had a fish story to tell.
The Omnibus Appropriations bill will support the Pacific Coastal Salmon Recovery Fund to the tune of $80 million. The money will support efforts to restore the West Coast's endangered salmon runs and improve salmon habitat.
"Salmon are an important part of our state's economic base," Murray said. "With our economy struggling, this (money) is more important that ever. These funds will support research, stewardship and restoration projects that will help restore salmon runs in our state and region."
In a recent analysis of the $410 billion appropriations bill, Murray ranked No. 11 in the listing of earmarks.
A pair of Republican senators from Mississippi, veteran Sen. Thad Cochran and rookie Sen. Roger Wicker, led the list of earmarkers. They were followed by Louisiana Sens. Mary Landrieu (D) and David Vitter (R).
Six of the Senate's top ten earmarkers were Republicans, but Democrats had the higher amount of earmarked money. The Omnibus Appropriations bill contained more than 8,700 earmarks.
