Was told a 40hp Johnson was to big to get the proper speed for fishing

How slow can the boat go now? It's probably easier to troll with the 40hp. You'll cover more water and still catch fish tolling faster than most. Carry a cell phone, 2 vhfs, a tow rope, heaving line, flares, paddle and an anchor if you're worried about having a back up motor. Keep your motor well tuned and only fish on nice days. Someone will help you if you get into trouble. On the other hand, if you already own a kicker why not have the peace of mind.
