RAFE HERE

Below is a letter to Craib McInnes of the Vancouver Sun on his column in today's paper.

Hi Craig ... it's good to see you and Scott on this energy fiasco.

Leaving aside the environmental rape (not easy to do) these points are. with respect, being glossed over.

1. private power will have almost no impact on BC power supply since the vast majority of it is created during the run-off when Hydro has lots of power

2. this means that Hydro, whose contracts are "take or pay", must export this power at 1/2 or less than it paid for it.

3. The Industrial brief puts the losses at $450 per year but that's on the light side. But suppose that's the amount, what happens to the large dividend Hydro pays annually to the government, money which builds schools, hospitals and the like?

(It's been said, seriously, that Hydro will raise its rates to pay for the dividend they've been forced to pay and then some to private power companies.

We are self sufficient and will be for as far ahead as one can see if we practice a modest amount of conservation, upgrade present facilities, put generators on flood control dams and take back the power that we're entitled to under the Columbia River Treaty.

The question that should be jumping out at all of us is "why the hell is this happening?"

The only answer is that Campbell is committed to the North American Grid, Ralph Klein a director, which subsumes BC needs and policies to a huge power distributor that couldn't care less about BC's needs, its policies or its environment.

Thanx for listening,

Sincerely,

Rafe Mair
