When to use 18lb canon balls

I've done testing on 10,12,15, and 18 lb balls. Pinching a finger between the gunnel and the ball hurts the most with a 18.

Back about 10 -12 years ago when commercial trolling was going through one of it's seemingly endless contractions there actually were some large cannonballs on the market even 50#ers but I think they all got melted down.

15lb inside, 18's offshore. tuna chord loop for a 2 second change out.

Do you use different clip lengths when switching to lighter weights? What’s people’s go-to clips for 18 lbs balls when fishing the shallows? 30, 48 or 60? Or does it matter at all??

I thought clip lengths were more dependent on the length of the rigger arm.

I’ve noticed when fishing shallow with 18lbs and longer clips, the angle of the dangle looks a bit dull. Switching to 30” puts a bit more drag on the DR line. May ir may not matter much this time of year but again, I don’t extend the DR arms when I fish solo. Will be playing with that next time.
