This is my response to the "WTF--Early herring fishery in the gulf " thread. I decided to put it in a new thread because it steers off the specific topic of this particular opening.
Any quotes have been taken from the before mentioned thread.
At the end of the day this is just one more example of how the government of this country is only interested in supporting it's own business philosophy that has turned a longstanding, well intended honest way of life into the commercial fishing cooperate machine it is today "MONEY NOW! SOME ONE ELSE'S PROBLEM LATER" This label I give it is directed to those at the top not the few hard working guys who are holding on and trying to carve out a living from this mess. It makes no difference what fishery we are talking about. The "big boys”, the corporation" has pinpointed and directed the financial benefits at so few people that the benefits to the public economy is far outweighed by the devastation to the resource. Need I say it again IT IS A PUBLIC RESOURCE!
Quoted from fish4all "They are trying to develop different markets with the same fish just a little earlier in the year."
Exactly my point. If they cared at all about long term sustainability of the entire marine echo system( That's right, that is what having no herring will negatively affect) they would be looking at this differently. They should take the opportunity that the decreased Asian market has presented the herring with, and put an end to a fishery that should not exist in the first place. Far too large of an impact to justify. No matter how much can be made.
Yes I know that would affect a handful of hard working fishermen that rely on openings to earn some money. That sucks, but only SHORT TERM. They would move on and find a way to carry on. We as humans are lucky that way we have many options. THE FISH DO NOT.
I can sit here and try to acknowledge all the factors and nuances that go into the decision making regarding commercial fishing. I could turn this into a 10,000 word essay trying to make everyone believe that I understand it all. Just as guys like fish4all and DFO for that matter can do the same to try to present the allusion that it is all ok. How it would read depends on what side of this you are on, or how you present the facts and historical records. NONE OF IT MATTERS!!!
IMO: No matter what our personal relationship with the ocean is. The most important questions that we should be asking is OF OUR SELVES.
Are we willing to continue watching as the corporate machine, along with the political selfishness of our leaders feeds it's greed until there is nothing left? When there is nothing left am I ok with looking back at this and saying "Remember when"?
In closing I will steer this back to topic regarding the herring fishery.
Every fisherman out there has heard or said............" FIND THE BAIT FIND THE FISH"
You tell me how removing mass quantities of the bait from the ocean so a few fat cats can get even fatter makes any sense.
MY 2 cents for what it is worth
Cheers: Ray
