Whale watching?

I plan on taking the family and friends from the East Coast out to Pacific Rim Park in August. Don't have a ton of money but think going out to see whales would be a once in a lifetime experience. I see tours leaving from Ucluelet and Tofino, Ucluelet being the less expensive. Any suggestions/advice on these tours? Ucluelet or Tofino?

Worth considering the Hot springs cove tour out of Tofino - you whale watch on the outside on the way there, get a couple of hours at the hot springs - beautiful boardwalk hike through coastal rainforest, cool soaking pools particularly the bottom one that mixes with incoming swells. On way back in you take the inside and see any whales in the channels as well as sea otter colonies, sea lions, etc. Same price as the straight whale watching but way more bang for your buck.

Cheaper out of Ukee into the Broken Group is also hard to beat, those tours also take you out to the sea lion haul out at Mara Rock, though not sure if many are there this time of year.
