Fish as You Wish
An American investment banker is in a tiny Baja fish camp
when a panga holding several large yellowfin docks.
The American asks the Mexican fisherman how long it took him to
catch the fish. The fisherman replies, "Only a little while."
Why didn't you stay out longer and catch more fish?"
asks the American.
With this I have more than enough to support my
family's needs," says the fisherman.
But what do you do with the rest of your time?" asks the
American.
The fisherman says, "I sleep late, fish a little, play with
my children, take siesta with my wife, Maria, stroll into the
village each evening where I sip wine and play guitar with
my amigos. I have a full and busy life."
The American scoffs, "You should spend more time
fishing, buy a bigger boat with the proceeds, and with the
proceeds from the bigger boat, buy several boats. Sell directly to
the processor, and open your own cannery so you control
the product. Then move to Mexico City and eventually New
York to run your enterprise."
But, how long will this all take?" asks the fisherman.
Fifteen to twenty years," says the American.
But what then?" asks the fisherman.
The best part!" says the American. "Announce an IPO
sell your stock, and become rich."
Rich? Then what?" asks the fisherman.
Then you retire, move to a small coastal fishing village,
sleep late, fish a little, play with your kids, take siesta with
your wife, stroll to the village in the evenings, sip wine and
play guitar with your amigos."
