The transient orca was spotted beached on the rocks near Hartley Bay on B.C.'s northern coast on Wednesday.
The whale apparently got stranded on the rocks as the tide receded.
Researchers from from Whale Point were joined by the Guardians of Hartley Bay and members of WWF as the community came together to keep the whale alive.
The volunteers kept the whale alive with wet sheets and water from a portable pump.
After six hours the whale managed to swim away on the next high tide.

An orca that was stranded on some rocks was kept alive for six hours by a dedicated team of whale researchers and volunteers on the North Coast of B.C.

"She cried often, which tore at our hearts, but as the tide came up there were many cheers as this whale was finally free after over six hours of being stuck on this rock," said a Facebook post from the group For Whales.

The group had received an alert about the beached orca, which was stuck on some rocks at low tide, and quickly arrived to cover it in sheets and water.

"It was a team effort, and fortunately on some level this transient orca understood that we were trying to help," said the group's posting.

Members of the World Wildlife Fund and the Guardians from Hartley Bay were also on the scene helping to free the animal, said the post.

"A giant thank you once again to this amazing community that comes together so quickly to protect what is sacred," said the For Whales post
