Where would be the best place to take the girl friend to see the salmon this time of year on the island

South Island, Goldstream is great, especially if you can get there early to avoid crowds. Sooke river is good too. Up Island, I've been to the hatchery on the Qualicum too, where you can go watch the fish go by through the glass under the water. Not sure about timing on that river, but pretty sure the run is on now too.

Yes, the Qualicum is a must see. BUT many many MANY places ... why not head to the Nanaimo hatchery for a start. Ans then Qualicum is an easy trip for you as well. Not only fish at the hatchery and spawning channels, but also a very nice walk along the river upstream of of the hatchery fence.
