Greetings from afar (Guernsey Channel Islands, UK ) - somewhwere near France.
I am planning a trip to your beautiful area in summer with my wife for a X fishing X I mean anniversary celebration. Is all I hear about the area true??
I'm hoping to get a trip or two out of the resort - deep sea for salmon, and possibly some fresh water dabbling too.
Any ideas/ advise/ encouragement accepted!!
I didn't know where to start- may be in the wrong place
thanks a load

Hey Jonny - beautiful country for sure up there. Fishing isn't what it used to be anywhere on the coast, especially in that area. If you are later in july, you should get into some nice fish, but don't assume non-stop action and also don't be surprised if you don't get much at all. They can also take you on wilderness tours to see bears, go through crazy rapids, eagles, seals etc etc It won't disappoint.

If you have additional time and aren't just tied to the lodge, plenty of places on Vancouver Island the need to be seen + fished - the Upper Campbell Lakes area will be great for trout and anywhere in Paradise Meadows would be great, then if you want beaches and such for the wife, Tofino is a must see, and you won't go wrong with Parksville as well.

If you want additional non-fishing insight, drop me an email deewar25@hotmail.com

Enjoy...

Good choice with Sonora Resort. You will love it. The web site does not do it justice. Although the fishing is not what it used to be, July is probably one of the better months. I would ask the resort to have either Tom Thompson or Cam Beck as your guides. They are probably the most experienced and successful. Good luck.

what about stan the man !!!![:0]

Jonny-If it's consistent fishing action you want then head to the west cost of Vancouver Island some place like this http://www.westcoastresorts.com/pdf/WCR_Walters_Cove.pdf

Yes Sonora is a top notch resort but fishing in that area isn't near what it once was and if you're doing a once-in-a-lifetime trip then go somewhere where fishing is #1.

thanks a lot guys - I am in the right place
that's all really helpfull stuff coming in from the outside
Walters Cove looks awesome for fishing, but not sure that Julie would like it as much as Sonora(as expensive as it is!).I may only get a couple of trips out fishing so wanna make them count.
Helpfull to ask for the guides by name thanks Klob.
All these fish are different to what we get here in the English Channel- especially keen on the salmon. A friend suggested that in July it may be possible to fish the inlets and river mouths for smaller saslmon and perhaps more sport than trolling deep water- any thoughts on that???
cheers Jonny

Well how about that… I actually heard of and knew where Guernsey Channel Islands, UK is… it’s where the Guernsey cow got its name.

If I was to ever travel 5,000 miles and talk my wife into a “X fishing X I mean anniversary celebration”, I would not show her any resort in that area. Don’t get me wrong, the Sonora Resort along with several others is great places catering to upscale fishing. But, don’t expect the salmon fishing to be very good! The Salmon Capital of the World is no longer Campbell River. The fishery in that area collapsed a few years back and has not recovered, yet.

I’ve spent a lot of time fishing up and down the West Coast of the U.S. and Canada an am here to tell you the fishing is far superior on the WCVI and up in the Charlottes. If you are looking for the upscale accommodations for your wife and still have a good fishing experience you should consider these:</u>

The Clubhouse @ the West Coast Fishing Club: http://www.westcoastfishingclub.com/WCFC.html

Langara Island Lodge @ Langara Fishing Adventures: http://www.langara.com/site/?id=4

Thanks Charlie
I will consider it - looks great at a quick glance
This is more a special anniversary trip than a fishing trip- so gotta make sure it is suitable for Julie

If your wife doesn't want to sit in a boat all day you are on the right track with Sonora.

After flying 5000 miles, knowing this is one of the best Salmon areas in the world - I would be thinking - COMBO TRIP

You could combine a nice 2/3 day package with one of the many Lodges on WCVI and then finish with the Sonora Resort. The Lodges on the WCVI are geared for fishing and do not have the upscale amenities found in resorts like Sonora, but some are nice places that I would take the wife. This would get you to some nice fishing grounds and believe it or not - you would spend less!

I would suggest flying into Vancouver, rent a vehicle (we do drive on the right side), drive over to one of the WCVI Lodges; spend a few days - then drive over to Campbell River. I believe the Sonora Resort will provide transportation to and from Campbell River. Most Lodges will provide transportation to and from Vancouver Airport.

Here are a few places I have been that you might find of interest:

Rodgers Fishing Lodge: http://www.rodgersfishinglodge.com/home.cfm?dir_cat=19404
Strictly a fishing lodge. Out in the middle of nowhere! About the only amenity for the wife is a hot tub on the deck. They do provide transportation to and from Tahsis and can provide a rental boat with or without guide service. I would not take my wife here unless she is into “roughing it”.</u>

Murphy’s Sport Fishing – Kyuquot: http://www.murphysportfishing.com/kyuquot.html
Basically the same as Rodger’s with the accommodations being a little better, but don’t think they have rental boats, but do provide some excellent guided fishing. I have fished alongside a many of his boats! It is in the same area as: The Lodge at Walters Cove and would be another good choice for this area: http://www.westcoastresorts.com/pdf/WCR_Walters_Cove.pdf , it is owned by West Coast Resorts: http://www.westcoastresorts.com/ourresorts.cfm I would consider taking my wife to either of these.</u>

Nootka Island Fishing Lodge: http://www.nootkaisland.com/
Located on the south end of Nootka Island and is a nice place. They have 2 nights – 3 day packages. You could drive to Gold River and then fly directly to the lodge. My wife could do this one for a couple of days!</u> Gold River is home to “Air Nootka,” which provides air service to any lodge or for that matter anywhere on the WCVI: http://www.airnootka.com/

Tofino offers several nice places and would give the wife something to do while you are out fishing. There are several things to do in this area and one really nice place is:

The Wickaninnish Inn, Tofino:</u> http://www.wickinn.com/ I could see my wife here and believe she would enjoy it!</u> For fishing you can charter out of Tofino, Weigh West Marine Resort: http://www.weighwest.com/index.html or Ucluelett, Island West Resort: http://www.islandwestresort.com/ I have used both of their services and there can be some really good fishing in July. This is the one I would recommend!</u> If you want more information, let me know!

There are a lot of lodges on the WCVI, these are just a few and any would be a good trip.

Hey Twister. Some of the ones Charlie mentioned, like Wickaninnish Inn are first rate.. But you cant beat Sonora for its wilderness setting . a fantastic lodge and great people.

I asked my wife, who has stayed at Wikinnish and Sonora, which she would pick and it was Sonora by a wide margin. Sitting in the hot tub with a libation, watching the currents roar through the area, and seals, eagles, and sealions in abundance just cant be beat.

Yes-- the fishing can be slower than the west coast, but you arnt taking gravol to keep breakfast down. Sonora does not get the afternoon winds or near as much fog as the west coast either.

I agree! That's why I would spend a couple of days at The Wickaninnish Inn, just for the fishing fix, then over to Sonora! That way he can get some "Quality" fishing in!:)

Personally, I would fly into Vancouver, rent a car, drive to Wickaninnish for 2 nights, charter out of, Island West Resort - for 2 morning trips, then drive to Campbell River for the Sonora Resort finish! Best of both worlds! :)
